尽管17世纪就已经出现了抽真空的专门器具,但是直到德国波恩的一个吹玻璃的工人师傅盖斯勒(Geissler),发明了一种后来被称为盖斯勒泵的真空泵之后,才使得真空玻璃管的真空度达到0.1毫米汞柱。这种泵的核心原理和日常的水银温度计类似,巧妙地利用了水银在玻璃管里能够形成很好的真空的特性,反复稀释和抽走容器里面的空气。看得出,这是一个典型的能工巧匠的设计成果。
