Advanced Knol Techniques

More complex knol editing tasks

Overview

This knol describes how to do more complex tasks with your knol.  Here are some links to other pages that will help you:

Inserting Images

To insert an image into a knol, click on the image icon on the toolbar.  If the image is already on the web, and you have permission to embed it, you can enter the URL.  Or you can use the Browse button to locate the image file on your local hard drive.  Once the file has been uploaded, click on the image and click the Add Image button to insert the image into your knol.  Additional help is here.

Creating and Formatting Tables

Knol also allows to introduce tables by the tool "Table" in the toolbar. Just click it and you will see the options. If you want more information about how to insert tables into your knols, click here.

If you know HTML, you can create and format your tables by editing the HTML directly.

Inserting videos, slideshows, spreadsheets and forms

You can enliven your knols by embedding various forms of media. See here.

Creating Links and References

You can create a link to another knol or another page on the Internet by clicking on Link on the toolbar at the top.  Then simply paste in the text that the user will click on and paste in the URL.

You can add a reference in a similar fashion by clicking on the [1] (reference) button on the toolbar.  More help is here.

Linking to bookmarked places in the same knol

You may prefer to create a manual reference-list (for example, a list of endnotes or footnotes) within the knol, rather than using the Knol Reference Tool. Or you may wish to create navigational links, to jump from one place to another within a knol. One of our users has created a mini-tutorial on how to do this here.

Working with the HTML Source

To work with the HTML version of your knol, click on the HTML button on the toolbar at the top.  You can then type or paste in HTML tags.  When your HTML editing is complete, click Update to save your HTML and return to the normal editor. Some ways that Knol authors are using the HTML edit mode to enhance their Knols are described here.

Changing your Bio/Profile

You can add a picture to your biography/profile and provide your credentials as an author.  A detailed tutorial is available here.

Track visits to your pages with Google Analytics

You can use Google Analytics to gain a sense of who is visiting your Knol pages, how they found them, how long they stayed.

Table Tool Is Online

This page needs to be updated to mention the addition of the table editor.

It's pretty primitive at present but it does help a lot, and if you click on the HTML View you can usually figure out how to modify the parameters to get what you want, for instance, invisible borders and so on.

Q: use of MS Word as drafting tool?

Q: use of MS Word as drafting tool?

background: I am puzzling out how to use MS Word to draft my content, then export as HTML and that will be what I publish via KNOL

suggest: separate KNOL articles -- moderated by the knol gnomes at google -- for each tool already available to 75+% of corporate America... MS Word, MS Visio, etc.

workflow: exporting as HTML...

1. Click (menubar) "File"
2. Click (menuoption) "Save As. . ."
3. Type unique file name in field "file name"
(example: "KNOL -- Business Rule -- Formatting USPS Addresses.HTML")
4. Select "Web Page" from (dropdown) “Save as type”
