How to Write a Letter to Santa Claus

Christmas is a busy time for Santa, and even though he does his best to remember what every nice boy and girl wants under the tree, he loves to get letters. That way he can tell the elves just which toys to build. Kids can change their minds as quickly as snowmen can melt, so make sure Kris Kringle knows what your kids want this year. Read them the instructions below to help them write a letter to Santa that will guarantee everyone is smiling on Christmas Day.

1. Get festive! Before you start writing, put on some Christmas music or watch a holiday video such as "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" to get you in the right frame of mind.

2. Collect your supplies. You'll need a piece of paper, a pencil or pen, an envelope and a postage stamp.

3. Start your letter with a greeting such as “Dear Santa.” Santa is also known as Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle and St. Nick, so you can address it to the name you use most often.

4. Ask Santa how he’s been. You only write Santa once a year, so let him know that you care about him by asking how he’s doing or how Mrs. Claus has been this year. This is a polite way to greet someone you haven’t talked to for a long time.

5. Make sure Santa knows you’ve been good. First, thank him for the toys you received last Christmas (if you didn’t send him a thank you note last year). Santa loves to know children appreciate him. Then let him know you've been good this year. You can him examples of the good things you've done, like being nice to your brother or sister or listening to your parents or teacher.

6. Ask for a few toys you’d really, really like. Now that you've told Santa how good you’ve been this year, you can ask him for a few special toys. Don’t make a long list. Three or four toys will do, and be sure they're toys your parents would want you to have. Santa can’t bring things your parents don’t allow, such as video games or movies that are for older kids. You might want to think of everything you’d like and then ask your parents to help you narrow it down to the two or three best ones.

7. Thank Santa for being so kind. Before ending your letter, be sure to tell Santa how much you appreciate all the toys he brings you every year. Santa loves little kids who have good manners.

8. Close your letter and sign it. End your letter with a closing phrase such as "Best wishes,” "Your friend," or “Love.” Then sign your name, put your letter in an envelope, seal it and put on a stamp. Ask your parents for help with the address.

9. Give the envelope to your parents. They’ll make sure your letter gets to the North Pole so Santa knows what you want for Christmas this year.

10. Wait patiently for Santa’s reply! Santa is very busy at Christmas, so he can’t answer you immediately, but you should get a reply within a week or two. Be patient! Your parents will let you know as soon as your letter comes.
