This knol describes what Linux is.


Linux is an Unix-like operating system[1], which adopts open source development model. It has been successful since its birth in 1991.

There are also various Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Fedora, Red Hat, Debian, Gentoo and SUSE Linux.[2] Such distributions consist of a Linux kernel and applications.

Linux is often considered as a server operating system, but nowadays its share in the desktop market is increasing.[3]
