Founded in July 2006, OpenDNS is a free service that can be used as an alternative to your Internet Service Provider's DNS Servers.
Some of the features that OpenDNS provides are:
- A Phishing Filter (Powered by Phishtank).
- Typo Correction (google.cmo is changed to google.com for example).
- Domain Blocking.
- Shortcuts (You could create a shortcut for http://webmail is forwarded to http://mail.yahoo.com)
- SmartCache (Caches last known address in case website's DNS host goes down) (Announced 4/24/09)
It's easy to start using OpenDNS.:
- Create a free account and add your network's external IP address to the Managed Networks List
- Select the categories that you would like to block/allow. They have filter levels such as High, Moderate, Low, Minimal. You can also customize the categories you would like to block. Examples of these categories are Pornography, Chat, Drugs, and Gambling.
- Then change the DNS servers on your router/pc to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.
At this point your network or pc will start using the OpenDNS service. A quick hop to http://www.opendns.com/welcome/ will let you know if everything is setup correctly.
For anyone that does not have a static external IP address (IP address does not change) you can use the OpenDNS dynamic IP updating client (Win or Mac) http://www.opendns.com/support/article/145. You can also use services like DNS-O-Matic for keeping your IP up to date.
