Google Knol How to Promote your Business

Discover how Google Knol will help you to promote any business, whatever your business

Google Knol is a new service from Internet giant Google. During this Knol you'll discover what Google Knol is and how Google Knol can help you to promote your business product or service and drive targetted traffic to your website. But before you dive straight in, make sure you read the tips section.

What is Google Knol?

Google Knol is very simply Google's answer to Wikipedia.  It is a collection of user generated content or articles referred to as a "Knols".  Each Knol becomes an entry in the huge online collaboration of information a bit like an encyclopedia.  A Knol can be an article on almost any subject.  It could be back pain, cars, motorbikes, dentistry, home improvements, finance, hobbies or any subject that you wish to write about - for business or for personal use.  No matter what your subject, this is for you.

Google Knol is relatively new following it's initial launch in 2008.  Whilst there is some content on there, there is plenty mroe to collate from users like you and I.  What this means to you is there is a great chance to create encyclopedia entries for words, terms and phrases relevant to your business

How did I discover Google Knol?

How I discovered Google Knol is worth a mention at this point.  With Google Knol, I didn't stumble across it by accident.  I was introduced to it and taught how it can be used to promote business online by a well known Internet Marketer called Armand Morin.  If you’ve been on the Internet at all over the past 12 years, you have seen Armand Morin whether you knew it or not. Either by seeing the end result of one of his many products, one of his student’s websites, or by simply seeing his name on hundreds of thousands of websites all over the Internet.  As a student of his on his Internet Marketing course he keeps me up to date with the latest Internet Marketing strategies.  To be honest, when Armand speaks, I listen!  I've have always seen great success when I've employed his strategies and I know that what he says about Google Knol will be no different.

How can Google Knol help you to promote your business?

Good question.

In fact my answer to this question relates to my opinion on the responsibilities of business owners to educate people.  Consider yourself to be an "expert" in your business area.  Whatever your business, there is always something that you can educate your customers on.  Essentially that's what people using Google Knol are looking for "knowledge".  If it's your knowledge article they click on and it's an article that they learn something from, it's likely that they'll want to look at your profile or click on your website links to discover more information.

Some examples:

  • Your business sells sales training courses - you could write a knol about a particular sales skill
  • You sell business insurance - you can write a knol which explains the different types of insurance avaiable and which ones are mandatory to help those setting out in business
  • You are a stress therapist - you can write a knol on dealing with different types of stress - financial, relationship, addiction etc
  • Your business sells software to help people market their business on the internet - you could write a knol that provides an introduction to internet marketing

Regardless of what your business is, what products or services you sell, I believe that you have a responsibility to educate your customers.

Of course, the first stage of internet marketing is getting an email address to build your list.  If the links you provide on your Google Knol link to your opt in page, then this is a great way of building your list.

I'm not going to go into how to setup pages to capture contact details or how to set-up free reports.  If you want to learn this stuff take a look at Armand Morin's Marketing Tutorials..

How many articles do I need to write?

Well that's entirely up to you.  Perhaps you build into your marketing strategy that you will visit Google Knol to write articles relevant to your business once a day or once a week.  It would be like your own regular magazine column each time leaving a new article and building up your own company directory of articles and traffic to your website - and in turn of course exposure to your products and services.  And on your website news page or article list, your blog or email newsletter you can include the link to your Knols.

As far as I can see, the more regular the better.  Once you've engaged a person reading one article I can say it's pretty likely that they'll want to click on the links to the other knols that you've created.

Now, this doesn't replace your other marketing strategies and should be used alongside the other things you need to be doing.  What I would also say, is don't expect just one article to deliver you results,  You're going to need to build up a few articles on similar topics linking in to each other.  In doing so you do a couple of things:

  • Firstly people get to see your other articles and the fact that you have written other articles means that you're not just a "one trick pony"
  • There is more chance of people finding your articles when you create a group of articles as they will each link to each other and bring up your rankings in the search engine

Make sure you put links to your Google Knols on your existing website, blog or email signatures to make sure people find the articles you write.
