[Let me explain the colors of this template. The red text you can delete, its only for description. The blue text is a "placeholder". So if you write a Knol about the Simpsons family, then you have to overwrite "Topic" with "The Simpsons Family" and "Chapter 1 Title" with "Bart Simpson" (if you like to begin with Bart). In the Chapter-Box there are four links. The links don't work in this template. You have to change the links with the title of your following chapters (may be "2 Lisa Simpson") and with the correct URL of your following chapters. You also have to overwrite the title of this Knol "Continued-Knol Templates" with the title of your Knol and you have to overwrite the introduction with your own introduction.]![]() |

1) Enter edit mode by clicking on the [Edit] tab on top of this section.
2) A toolbar appears on top of your knol. Place your cursor at the location in the text where you would like the image to be inserted and click on the [Insert] button on this toolbar, then choose "Images".
3) You can choose to add images from your computer, or from the web if you can provide the URL of a particular picture that you have the rights to use. If there are images that we’ve obtained for your use from a third party (such as The Cartoon Bank), that option will be shown here. If you have uploaded pictures to Knol previously, they will be displayed here.
4) Select an image by clicking on it, then click [Add Image] to insert the selected image into your knol.
5) You can now drag the image around and position it the way you want within your text. Your text should smoothly flow and wrap around the figure when displacing it. You can also move an image by cut-and-paste."

Suggested Edit
I think it is more clear now...
But "Topic: Chapter 1" under the "title" makes it sound like you are only talking about the first chapter... and you are already using "Topic: Chapter 1", two times just below it...
If I did an edit, I would change...
Continued-Knols Template
Topic: Chapter 1
to...
Continued-Knols Template
Breaking a Long Knol into Chapters
This is a template for multipart / continued knols. If a knol is 10 screen pages or longer, we recommend spliting the knol into separate smaller knols. Each of these new smaller knols is a chapter. You can use the Chapter-Box at the top right, and the Link-Box at the end of the knol to allow navigation through the chapters of your knol collection.
and add a note at the end of the Knol saying something like...
( Use the same template for the following Chapters, adapting the Template as necessary. )
It's not easy to decide where I use real content and where I use placeholders. I changed "Topic: Chapter 1" into "Breaking a Long Knol into Chapters"

Another first impression
One more thing that caught my eye... I think there needs to be a clear separation between the
"format" of this KNOLL ITSELF, and the "KNOLL TEMPLATE" that is the content of this Knoll... Maybe you could start the knoll with a short paragraph about choosing a "short descriptive title', "key words", etc... then continue with the "Template" something like this...
--------------------
(this part is "Google format")
Title of Knoll
Brief description of knoll
Contents
--------------
(this part is the "Knoll Template")
Topic introduction and description of all the continued Knolls
Knoll Chapter 1: Title

I wrote now a little text. In templates black text should be used as original text for the Knol, blue text is a "placeholder" and has to be overwrite with the new text and red text is only description and should be deleted. Are the words "Placeholder" and "overwriting" the correct words? I think, it's a good idea to use colours.

But Peter Baskerville's knol here shows one example:
http://knol.google.c
And, at the bottom of this page we have a comment:
http://knol.google.c
discussing the use of color-coding in templates. Trudy Robinson gave some feedback.
Once you and other authors have more practical experience with templates, please chime in and lets see if we can agree on some best practices to recommend for everyone who writes templates.

Three first impressions
I think this is a really good start...
The three comments below are my "first impression" looking at the Knoll,
1... You might consider adding at least one, or more, photographs to make the Knoll visually more attractive... especially if the photographs (drawings, graphs, charts, etc.) are considered to be "visual content".
2... You might also consider adding some "descriptive text" placed here and there inside of the
"xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
3... When I tried to "click" on the link to "chapter two", i got a message saying, "oops, this link is broken"... at first i thought that the link was broken, and that i was unable to see the rest of the Knoll... then I realized that it was "probably" meant to be that way... I think that this is confusing.
Thank you for your suggestions!
I think it is easier to use this templates without visual content. It's easier to use "Insert Image" as to use a template with wrong photographs on false places. Your points 2 and 3 are good suggestions.
Best Regards
Andreas

Regarding Seeger's point #1, when we (Matt Ghering and Michael McNally) were create the How To template for the "Knol for Dummies" contest (http://knol.google.

I've now insert a picture and some text from "Insert Images" with a link to this Knol. I hope it's more useful now for beginners.
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions!
