Introduction to University of Calcutta
The University of Calcutta which is also known as the Kolkata Vishwavidyalaya or the Calcutta University is located at the center of the Indian Book Hub, College Street in Kolkata, West Bengal.
It was established on 24 January 1857 during the administration of Lord Canning, the governer-general of India at that period of time. It is the first modern university in the history of India. It is a state government affiliating and research university. It is present in a small area of less than 2.7 acres size in College Street.
The Chancellor of the university is Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Governor of West Bengal and the Vice-Chancellor is Professor Suranjan Das.
