Busby SEO Challenge is the name of what has become one of the biggest, if not the biggest search engine contests that is currently being played by quite a number of search engine optimization (SEO) consultants, firms and enthusiasts. The contest began June 1, 2008 and will end on August 31st, 2008 midday Western Australian time. The goal of the contest is to rank number 1 on Google for the term "Busby SEO Challenge".
One of the factors for this particular contest becoming this popular is the fact that the prize money on offer is quite decent. The winner of the challenge gets to walk away with $5000. The second and third place entries get $2000 and $500 respectively. Some may argue that there is lot of pride and fame at stake with a contest of this size which is also probably contributing to the appeal of this particular challenge.
At last count, the number of contestants stood at close to 450 and the number of pages that Google currently displays in its index is just over a million which is one of the reasons for this contest to be touted as the biggest SEO challenge to date. Yahoo on the other hand shows close to 3 million pages indexed for the key phrase Busby SEO challenge which by any stretch of imagination is quite high for a term that was coined about 2 months ago.
While some may frown on this contest as polluting the search index, the sponsors and organizers generally pick terms or phrases that are quite out of the ordinary as in this case. Nobody but the contestants would be searching for the phrase "Busby SEO Challenge" and because of this search engines such as Google and the rest generally turn a blind eye to such SEO contests and view it more as a marketing exercise by the sponsors.
