What is Tinnitus

What is tinnitus? It’s a question you often hear from those who are not familiar with this medical term for a ringing in the ears.  Ringing in the ears or ear ringing is the term commonly used by people to describe any noise that a person may hear like a hissing, humming, chirping, ticking, roaring, buzzing, etc either in one or both ears.

The noise that one person may hear can differ from another person who has the same condition.  So with the intensity of the noise.   It may also take place in the outer, middle and inner ears or the brain.  Several people seem to be confused what is tinnitus as the source of the noise is not known.

To be able to fully understand this condition, one should understand that tinnitus is not in any way a disease or illness.  It is just a symptom which can result from various disorders that may affect the ears.  But there is no single disorder that has been identified as the real exact cause of a tinnitus, thus it is important that each person who hears an ear ringing should be diagnosed immediately for proper treatment to be undertaken.

There are so-called popular known causes of tinnitus and these are the things that we need to take note off if we hate the idea of joining the millions of people who now have tinnitus.  Remember that knowing the causes will not only help those who already have the condition but will also serve as prevention for healthy individuals.

Exposure to loud noise, ear infections, ototoxicity, and presbycusis are some of the common causes of tinnitus.  Quite a big number of individuals appear to have damaged hearing from exposure to loud noise.  A cause of tinnitus that is rampant amongst the youth who love to listen to their favorite music at extremely loud volumes is exposure to loud noise.  It is fine to listen to music, as long as the volume is at regulated levels.

Ear infections affect the inner ears and can block the ear canal.  Infections need to be treated immediately but one must also watch out for side effects of medicines because ototoxicity can be highly dangerous to the ears and can cause permanent tinnitus.  Presbycusis on the other hand is one cause of tinnitus which we cannot avoid as we grow old.  Our nerves slowly deteriorate thus causing hearing impairment.

Now that you know what is tinnitus and what its causes are, there is no reason for you not to know what to do with it or take steps to avoid it.  Tinnitus can be avoided and it can also be treated.
