Jewish Holidays

The dates of Jewish holidays do not change from year to year. Jewish holidays are celebrated on the same day of the Jewish calendar every year. The Jewish calendar is based on the cycle of the moon. The Gregorian calendar used by most of the western world is based on the solar year. Since the lunar year of the Jewish calendar is not the same length as the solar year of the Gregorian calendar, the date shifts on the Gregorian calendar.

Rosh Hashanah - Jewish New Year [1]

Yom Kippur - Day of Atonement; the most solemn day of the year in Judaism; a day of fasting and prayers. [2]

Simchat Torah - Day of Celebrating and Rejoicing the Torah [5]

Purim - Purim is one of the happiest and fun holidays on the Jewish calendar. It commemorates the time when the Jewish people living in Persia were saved from extermination. [8]

Passover (Pesach) - The Feast of Unleavened Bread. Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land. [9]

Lag Baomer - The 33rd day of the Omer. [10]

Shavuot - Festival of Weeks; Commemorates the giving of the Torah. Also called Festival of the First Fruits and the Wheat Harvest Festival. [11]

Tisha B'Av - Annual fast, commemorates the destruction of the two temples in Jerusalem. [12]
