Failure is inherent to Windows operating system. The reason is very simple: a computer is essentially assembled from standard parts made by different manufacturers, problems of compatibility and / or instability can occur in medium term during its use. Thus manufacturers and publishers still offer software patches during the lifetime of the computer. These patches provide a better compatibility between hardware and the Windows system. These numerous actors in the field of hardware and software compatibility raise its difficulty level to 100%. We will say that PC world is an open system.
When we analyse more closely a computer pc connected to Internet can be seen as if there are several bricks or layers:
1. The hardware : motherboard, hard disk, memory, video card, and peripherals.
2. The drivers: necessary interfaces between the Windows operating system and hardware
3. The Windows Operating System.
4. Applications: office, multimedia, graphics and internet.
5. The Internet: accessible by applications Outlook Express, Internet Explorer, peer to peer software.
You can stack these layers successively according to a horizontal axis to build the distribution of failures in terms of their original meaning to plot the curve determining the relative number of interventions based on the origin of the blackout.
Given the statistics obtained during our interventions, we will assume that the distribution is Gaussian type :
We note the importance of the natural order of layers piled like a computer, thus highlighting the relative number of interventions and the nature of the corresponding blackout depending on the duration of intervention.
This is not a fortuitous coincidence but a model that reflects a simple and natural experience encountered during our interventions at home.
I mentioned the term T-minute intervention by the nature of the failures following a corresponding Gaussian type distribution. The percentage of intervention is a standard deviation of 15 minutes sigma learned. The standard deviation measures the dispersion around the average which is about 75 minutes for the duration of the intervention. Depending on the values of T we have:
0 <T <30 HARDWARE: replacement of defective parts. (~ 0.13%)
30 <T <60 DRIVERS : Reinstallation of drivers. (15.73%)
60 <T <90 WINDOWS & APPLICATIONS: Corruption Windows file, reinstallation and configuration of applications. (68.26%)
90 <T <120 INTERNET: cleaning viruses and spyware, restoration of the operating system. (15.73%)
120 <T <150 INTERNET: cleaning viruses and spyware, restoration of the operating system with data backup (~ 0.13%)
The very low rate of hardware failures is linked to a high quality of manufacture of components used in the manufacture and assembly of a computer.
I failed to mention the BIOS layer after HARDWARE layer because the BIOS file corruptions are extremely rare.
It is not surprising that the bulk of failures i.e. 68.26% relates to Windows and applications; windows because it is driving the computer and applications as they are commonly used to carry out the tasks desktop and the Internet.
Then in the same proportion i.e. 15.73% we have the problems on the one hand to install drivers and other dysfunctions due to the presence of viruses and spyware that can lead to restoration of the system in most serious cases. This does not mean that you will not find problems related to viruses in the other 68.26% portion.
Application? This predictive model allows the company to provide home computer repair to better manage technicians planning and their skill level depending on the diagnosis of the blackout made by phone at the customer order, the level of competence is necessary because of higher centre of the curve and lesser sides.
