Creating Your MX Records & CNAME Records for Google Apps: (mt) Media Temple

Setting up MX Records & CNAME Records for Google Apps on (mt) Media Temple

This guide will show you how to setup Google Apps with your (mt) Media Temple service.

This guide will show you how to setup Google Apps on your (mt) Media Temple service. You can create MX records to direct your mails services to Google Apps. This is performed the same way for all of (mt) Media Temple services. You can read more about this at: How can I change the DNS records for a domain I registered/host with (mt) Media Temple?
Note: This guide uses mt-example.com as a example domain. Please remember to replace mt-example.com with your domain name whenever it is used.
1. Login to your (ac) AccountCenter
2. Click on your Primary Domain
3. Click on "Edit Zone File"

4. Delete the current MX and A records for mail.

5. Add the following MX Records to your zone file with their corresponding priorities.
Please enter the following MX Records (The period at the end must be included):

Note: The "l" is in fact a lower case letter L, and the period at the end is required.

  • 1 aspmx.l.google.com.
  • 5 alt1.aspmx.l.google.com.
  • 5 alt2.aspmx.l.google.com.
  • 10 aspmx2.googlemail.com.
  • 10 aspmx3.googlemail.com.
  • 10 aspmx4.googlemail.com.
  • 10 aspmx5.googlemail.com.

6. Add the following CNAME Records to your zone file. (Optional but recommended)

The above CNAME Records show the example default recommended, these can be customized to your choosing. Remember to login and let Google Apps know that you are using your own custom URL's. Click here for more instructions.

7. Click Save.
Important Note: You will also want to disable local mail delivery for your domain. I have provided the instructions for each of (mt) Media Temple services.
For (ss) Shared-Sever Customers:
Currently the option to disable local mail is not available, however you may submit a support request so that the (mt) support will disable it for you. Please be aware if that if mail is disabled on the (ss) Shared-Server, that this will apply to all of your domains. This is why Shared-server customers are encouraged to migrate to the (gs) Grid-Service where the option to disable mail per domain is available. The automated migration tool can be found within your (ac) AccountCenter:

1. Login to your (ac) Account Center
2. Click on your Primary Domain
3. Click on Migrate to (gs) Grid-Service

For (gs) Grid-Service Customers:

1. Login to your (ac) AccountCenter
2. Click on your Primary Domain
3. Click on "Enable/Disable Mail"
4. Select "No" for the domain and then click "Save".

You can read more about this at:
How can I Enable or Disable local mail for your (gs) Grid-Service?

For (dv) & (dpv) Dedicated-Virtual Servers:
1. Login to Plesk (http://yourdomain:8443)
2. Click on Domains
3.
Click on the domain for which you wish to enable/disable mail
4.To disable mail click on Switch OFF

You can read more about this at:
Enabling/Disabling local mail for (dv) & (dpv) Dedicated-Virtual Servers.

Congratulations! Your email should now work with Google Apps. Keep in mind that changes to DNS record settings may take 12 to 72 hours to propagate.

Nice explanation, few edits

Might want to mention that the "l" in the zone file edits is in fact a lower case letter L.

Also, a link to how to move imap folder over would be great.
