Blu-ray Duplication is defined as copying or "burning" the content of a High Definition video project to blank BD-R or BD-RW media. The content can be supplied as a disc image or BD-R master. The results of Blu-ray Duplication can be a very high quality reliable disc, provided you use quality blank media, verify the integrity of the master, and burn the disc with a good burner. One issue regarding blank Blu-ray burnables that has not been proven out yet is the need for a more resilient scratch resistant surface on the burned side. Since the laser beam of the Blu-ray disc is much more narrow than that of Standard Def DVDs, the BD-R (Blu-ray Blank) may be more susceptible to error due to smudging and scratching of the disc surface. For that reason a few good suppliers have engineered a tougher scratch resistant coating on their discs. The quality of current burnable BD-Rs can vary widely in this current market, as many manufacturers are scrambling to get to market. Retail costs have been ranging from $25 to $8, with varied quality results. We have found, as would be expected, that the more costly blanks have yielded far superior results.
