Long hose diving

A better kit configuration.

Diving kit has largely evolved from the exacting world of cave diving. Now long hose diving is making the transition from caves to recreational diving.

The octopus system used by PADI actually came from Florida cave diving where Sheck Exley had a second DV outlet machined into his first stage.

Florida cave diving has moved on and the standard now is the Hogarthian rig developed by Bill Main. This, like the octopus before it, has found its way into a wider range of diving. The rate that it is growing in popularity it will soon be the new standard. It is a better way.

Basically you still have 2 DVs. The one you breathe out of normally is at the end of a 2 metre “long hose”, the second one is kept just under your chin held in place by a necklace of bungee cord or surgical tubing.
In a real OOA the victim will always just grab the regulator out of your mouth. Using the conventional octopus that leaves you struggling to find, deploy and purge your octopus whilst someone else is panicking right next to you. With the Hogarthian rig you can push the victim away and they will still be OK because of the long hose, you can secure your own air supply just by lifting the regulator from under your chin.
WARNING I see a lot of people with necklace regulators halfway down their chests, this is no good. You need to have it right under your chin so you can deploy it without your hands, just by dipping your chin.

So here are some advantages of the long hose/necklace rig:
1) Panicking OOA diver is not right next to you.
2) Very easy deployment of necklace regulator.
3) Victim knows they are getting a working regulator.
4) Victim knows they are getting a gas breathable at that depth.
5) You can go single file to get out of a wreck or cave.
