Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas is normally getting celebrated on December 25th all over the world.
The word 'Christmas' is derived from "Christ-mass". X-mas is commonly used as an abbreviation for Christmas. The letter X (chi), is the first letter of Christ in Greek.
Even-though Christmas is getting celebrated on December 25th, there is no strong evidence for December 25th as birthday of Jesus Christ.
Christmas is meant for Love ,Peace and Sharing. But now-a-days it is going far away from the concept. People are giving more importance for celebration only, and therefore Sales of Gifts and other household things are taking more priority than spirituality.

Is it reasonable/explainable to develop false belief about Santa claus among Kids?
One persons in this discussion says "Unfortunately the real story behind Santa is Coca Cola". and he raises a question " Why not the gift come directly from a loving parent and the parent saying its from them... vs. some fictional figure that we know is the creation of Coca Cola? "

Usually an empty stocking will be placed near the chimney by the children. They are believing that Santa will come and fill the stockings with small gifts like chocolate, candy, smalltoys...etc but a naughty child will receive a coal alone. The gifts which are all used to fill the stockings are called as stocking fillers or stuffers. There is a legend behind the Christmas stockings. There was a nobleman in a town. He had three daughters who were not yet married because he has no money to give dowry. The daughters placed their stockings on the fireplace mantel.During the Christmas eve Santaclaus came and put a bag of gold in their stockings. The next day they saw their stockings were filled with gold coins. These names are appeared in American Literature in 1823.This famous poem was written by Clement Clarke More entitled "Twas the Night Before Christmas".
In this team a new member called "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" is added.
Twas the Night before Christmas Poem
Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!
"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.
His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
As per the story,Rudolph is a red nosed reindeer.Because of his red nose ,it was not able to mingle with other renideers. One Christmas Eve was very foggy so Santa Claus was not able to deliver the gifts. That time he saw the glowing red nosed reindeer. He got the help from glowing red nosed Rudolph to lead the sleigh for the rest of the gifts delivery.
This story is very famous Christmas story and also the song.
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer : Lyrics
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw him,
you would even say it glows.
All of the other reindeer
used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor Rudolph
join in any reindeer games.
Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say:
"Rudolph with your nose so bright,
won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"
Then all the reindeer loved him
as they shouted out with glee,
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,
you'll go down in history!

In Mexico the poinsettia is called "flower of the Holy Night".In Spain its is known as "Flor de Pascua"
Mistletoe
The world "mistletoe" is derived from the Anglo-Saxon words "mistel"(dung) and "tan"(twig).

For every kiss that's given.
When the berries have all gone
There's an end to kissing.'

Jesus. After crcification it became dwarafed parasitic vine.

1. Jingle Bells
| Dashing through the snow, in a one-horse open sleigh, Over the fields we go, laughing all the way. Bells on bob-tails ring, making spirits bright, What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight. Chorus Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. | |
| A day or two ago, I thought I'd take a ride And soon Miss Fanny Bright, was seated by my side; The horse was lean and lank, misfortune seemed his lot; He got into a drifted bank and we got upsot (Chorus) A day or two ago, the story I must tell I went out on the snow, and on my back I fell; A gent was riding by, in a one-horse open sleigh He laughed as there I sprawling lie but quickly drove away (Chorus) Now the ground is white, go it while you're young Take the girls tonight, and sing this sleighing song; Just get a bob-tailed bay, two-forty as his speed Hitch him to an open sleigh and crack! you'll take the lead (Chorus) | |
2.Silent Night
Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavely hosts sing alleluia;
Christ the Saviour, is born!
Christ the Saviour, is born!
Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
3.Hark the herald angels sing : Lyrics
Hark the herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
Christ by highest heav'n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
4.We Three Kings of Orient Are : Lyrics
We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star
O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy Perfect Light
Born a King on Bethlehem's plain
Gold I bring to crown Him again
King forever, ceasing never
Over us all to rein
O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light
Frankincense to offer have I
Incense owns a Deity nigh
Pray'r and praising, all men raising
Worship Him, God most high
O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light
Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume
Breathes of life of gathering gloom
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb
O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light
Glorious now behold Him arise
King and God and Sacrifice
Alleluia, Alleluia
Earth to heav'n replies
O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light

Faith and reason: an invitation to Christians
Albert Einstein said, “The further the spiritual evolution of mankind advances, the more certain it seems to me that the path to genuine religiosity does not lie through the fear of life, and the fear of death, and blind faith, but through striving after rational knowledge.”
"I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with senses, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use." Galileo Galilei
This invitation is extended to the fellow Christians with love and compassion because the Holy Quran says about them:
And thou shalt assuredly find those who say, ‘We are Christians,’ to be the nearest of them in love to the believers. That is because amongst them are savants and monks and because they are not proud.
(Al Quran 5:83)
Andrew Conway Ivy writes, “One should never retreat from reason. One should use reason, and use it accurately and aggressively. A faith which is not preceded by reason is a weak faith and is vulnerable to devastating attack and to subversion. Religious faith not based on reason breeds bad character and bad conduct.”

So What Is Christmas?
You are building a very appealing knol here but don't you think it's lacking in one very basic ingredient?
What is Christmas? What does it commemorate or symbolise? I know it's become primarily a commercial opportunity in many parts of the world, but it does actually have some spiritual significance.
Some people will be more than slightly offended by the way you've constructed this. The birth of Jesus is reduced to a note connected to a plastic crib! The only worthwhile contribution on the Christian front is PV Ariel's knol. I'd suggest you correct this imbalance. Explain what Christmas is first of all. The rest should follow.
Good luck. Garry
I will update this knol with content answering "What is Christmas?".
Actually I have started preparing this content (i-e"introduction to Christmas") sometime back itself. But still it is not completed. I will update it once it ready.
There is no intention for avoiding spiritual significance of Christmas.
Thanks,
Rajamanickam
