Ribbon Information

Information and comparison of the many different types of ribbon

There are numerous types of ribbon out there, and all of them have very different characteristics and qualities. Some types work great for sewing, some for weddings. Some are quite expensive, while others are very affordable. This article will attempt to show you which ones are the best for different situations

Best Applications for ribbons.

Some ribbons work well for some things and horribly for others. I will give some guidelines and my opinions for working with various ribbons.

Wedding Ribbon:

Double Faced Satin Ribbon: Very classy. Silky smooth and very reflective. This ribbon is a good choice for weddings and other formal occasions, where only the best is wanted.

Metallic Shimmer Ribbon: If you would ever associate a ribbon with a wedding, it would probably be the Metallic Shimmer Ribbon. It's a woven ribbon with shiny, metallic threads amonst the weave to give it a standout, elegant look.

Organza Ribbon: Also a slam dunk for a wedding. Looks good with just about every theme I can think of. Seems to work particularly well with flower arrangements. This ribbon is also quite transparent.

Satin Edge Organza and Shear Edge Garbo Ribbons: These two ribbons are opposites of each other. Satin Edge Organza has smooth satin on the outside edge of the ribbon and organza style weave on the inside. Shear Edge Garbo is the same, but with the organza on the outside and the satin on the inside. These are some of you typical wedding styles.

Two Sided Satin Ribbon: This ribbon is very similar to Double Faced Satin except it is different colors of satin on either side of the ribbon. I would use it anywhere you would use Double Faced Satin Ribbon but want to make it a little more stylish.

Sewing Ribbon:

Picot Edged Satin: This one is a very traditional fabric edging ribbon. Can make many traditional projects look amazing.

Themed Ribbon:

Holiday Plaid: Perfect for around the Holidays. Great for gift wrapping.

Gingham Ribbon: Also great for holiday themed decoration.

Other Uses:

Twill Ribbon: One of the strongest ribbons I've ever seen. This is the material most lanyard are made out of. Perfect for crafts and tasks where usability is a little bit more important that the way it looks.

Satin Acetate: This ribbon is great when you need a lot of it and are on a budget. You can literally get miles of the stuff for a reasonable low price.

Printing on Ribbons:

A great final touch for ribbon. There are services that can print your name, logo, or anything else onto a ribbon. This can add a great personal touch to your wedding, anniversary, or birthday party. Our company specializes in this practice. If you are interested in buying and printing your ribbon you should take a look at printmyribbon.com

Here are a few pictures of what it could look like:

Ribbon Comparison Table:

Bellow is a quick and easy comparison guide setup to easily see the differences across a broad spectrum of ribbon. The price category is only an estimate. Different stores and retailers could price the ribbon differently.
