A content management system or web content management system is usually a webbased system that allows editors to manage the content without entering web language like HTML, CSS etc. This makes a website easy to maintain and edit without to much technical knowledge.
CMS-systems
Most CMS-systems allow users to keep content (the text, images, video, audio etc.) separated from the style (layout) of the website. This allows an organization to keep the website organized in a structured and uniform way. The content is placed in a layout using predefined templates that give the style to the website.Versioning
The content is placed in a database that usually allows the users to keep versions of pages, and stores additional data like, dates, editors, reviewers, etc. to the content and presents it online or to the editors or reviewers for additional control over the website.CMS vs. ECMS
While a CMS controls the website content and style a ECMS (Enterprise Content Management System) focuses on content (documents, text, video, drawings, ebooks, audio) on the corporate level. An ECMS sometimes is compared with DMS (Document Management System) and both allow the user to manage documents and other content. You can read more on this on our CMS site.
