Winter in Breckenridge: What You Might Not Know

Breckenridge house rentals

Winter in Breckenridge might be focused on the Ski Resort, but there are several other activities that make it the perfect town for a winter vacation.

The Breckenridge Ski Resort is world famous for good reason.  With more than thirty lifts and over 150 runs, Breckenridge offers a good variety of skiing and snowboarding terrain for all levels.  That’s old news.  What you may not know about Breckenridge, however, is that it’s a lot more than a mountain ski town.  In fact, skiing and boarding are only two of the many activities that make Breckenridge the place to plan your winter getaway.  Here’s a look at some of the other reasons to get to Breck.

The Thrill of Skill and Competition: We all like to show off, but none of us do it as well as the professional skiers and boarders who flock to Breckenridge from all over the world!  The Breckenridge Ski Resort’s world-renowned terrain park catches attention from professional athletes who make free styling look like a walk in the park.   The Dew Tour brings some of the world’s top skiers and boarders to this freeskiing and snowboarding event that includes exciting competitions of slopestyle and superpipe boarding.  And, the Spring Massive keeps the competitive focus on Breckenridge into the spring, when on-hill competitions compliment food, brew, and music for the town’s end of the season April celebration.   In Breckenridge, becoming a spectator is a serious sport.

Winter Sports Abound:  While the main focus is rightly on the skiing and boarding in Breckenridge, there’s plenty of activity for those who need a day or two off from the slopes.  Dog sledding is a popular and exciting sport in Breckenridge that literally puts you in the driver’s seat behind a pack of Siberian Huskies.  Snowmobiling is also exciting, and allows you a spectacular look at some of Breck’s beautiful backcountry.  Of course, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, and tubing are also popular snowy activities and can often be accessed right outside of the back door from your Breckenridge condo or vacation home.

Festival Madness:  Breckenridge locals have a blast on the slopes.  There’s no doubt about that.  But, the town is just as serious about celebrating together off the slopes as they are on.  Winter festivals run throughout the season with one of the highlights being Ullr Fest, a wacky, weeklong festival each January in Breckenridge.  The town pays homage to the mythical God of snow in this festival with a Viking-themed parade and the Ullympics.  Then, in late January and early February, the International Snow Sculpture Championship brings ice sculptor teams from around the world to compete in a five-day contest with a challenge of creating intricate sculptures out of snow.

Making a Sport of Cabin Fever:  Sure, Breckenridge advertises itself as an active town.  Still, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to stay bundled up inside during the winter as well.  Main Street is packed with a variety of restaurants, bars, shops, and art galleries for those who want to get out of the snow.  And, there are plenty of opportunities in Breckenridge to pamper your body with spa services.  Of course, there’s no shame in curling up next to the fire or spending an entire night relaxing in your hot tub in Breckenridge either.  Fortunately, with the array of condos, townhomes, and Breckenridge house rentals, you can easily find accommodations that match your desire to be overcome by cabin fever.

While planning a skiing or snowboarding trip in Breckenridge might be the initial reason for your vacation, you are sure to find a great deal more to keep you busy once you get to town.  With no shortage of winter fun in Breckenridge, you’ll be begging for an extension of your vacation in no time.
