Interlace Web Clip Art Images

Using clip art

Interlacing is used to decrease the download time needed to display clip art. When using interlaced clip art, a low-resolution version of the image appears first, and then a version that is slightly higher in resolution follows. Finally, the high-quality version of the image appears. This is effective because the visitor's initial view of the image only gets better as the site downloads.

Interlace Web Clip Art Images

Count on interlaced images to decrease the download time necessary to display the pages of your website. When you interlace an image, it is divided into tiny, horizontal bars that progressively load to form the final image. Both GIF and JPEG formats support interlacing and are recommended for use on the Web.

Use Adobe Photoshop to interlace your image by deciding on the clip art you would like to include on your site and opening it in Photoshop.

Save the file as a "JPEG" or "GIF," if it is not already in one of these formats, by clicking "File" from the top menu bar, followed by "Save As." Then, choose the format from the drop-down menu.

Find the "Window" menu with your cursor, and click on "Optimize" from the list, so that a check mark appears next to the word.

Look for a small box in the right-hand column of your screen. Click on the "Options" tab found in this box.

Choose from the available choices in the "Options" tab of the "Optimize" box. You should see an option for "Interlaced" or "Optimized." Both of these terms mean the same thing, but the former applies to GIF files while the latter applies to JPEG files.

Save a copy of the file, which is now an interlaced image. This is the version of the web graphic that should be uploaded to your website. Be sure that the appearance of the image has not been distorted before adding it to your site.

Tips & Warnings

  • Interlaced clip art is especially helpful for website visitors who have slow Internet connections, as they are able to get a good impression of what the image looks like before it is fully downloaded.
  • Don't go overboard with images. Interlacing is only effective to a point. It is still important to be conservative with the amount of clip art and other images you include on each page of your site, keeping the download time manageable.
