In a woodworking shop, a lathe is a tool used to make round edges or grooves in a piece of wood with chisels or other tools. A staple tool for a carpenter, the lathe needs to be maintained and protected from excessive wear. There's the issue of cost: a lathe is an expensive power tool, like a planer, router or table saw. There's also the pride that comes with taking care of your tools.
Use care when working on and around the machine. Don't bang on the headstock with hand tools. Fit the wooden pieces neatly into their holders and keep the bed relatively clean.
Keep the lathe lubricated. The headstock bearing and the spindle often need oil to run without grinding.
Covering the lathe when not in use protects it from dust and debris from other machines.
Keep your chisels sharp. Don't gouge into pieces with dull instruments. Excessive pressure puts wear on the machine and is inefficient. Take care not to jog the machine.
Pay attention to belts. If a belt is getting cracked, mildewed or slack fix it promptly to prevent more wear.
Maintain your power source. If your lathe is electric (as opposed to hand powered) don't let the connecting wires fray or expose the plug to water or any other hazard.
