Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is one of the most widely used digital photography editing programs. Many computers come with Adobe Photoshop already installed. It can also be purchased separately. There are currently four editions of Adobe Photoshop available to consumers. Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 is the basic program. Adobe Photoshop GS4, CS4 Extended and Lightroom 2 are for more advanced users who desire more features. Any of the Photoshop products can be used to make computer wallpaper.

Create a New Wallpaper Document

Launch Adobe Photoshop. Before putting together your wallpaper, you must first establish a screen resolution that matches the screen resolution for your computer. If your computer has a "Print Screen" key, press it then press "CTRL-N" to create a new document. This automatically sets the screen resolution. If your computer can not do this, select "New" from the main page and create a new document for your wallpaper. Enter the screen width, height and resolution. If you don't know this, leave it as 1024 x 768. Also name your wallpaper, set the color mode as "RGB Color" and make the background contents "Transparent."

Design Wallpaper In Layers

Adobe Photoshop allows you to create many different design pages then layer them on top of each other to form the wallpaper. This is handy since you can place one image, text or graphic on each layer then combine them. You can create as many layers as you want. It is best to start with your largest element then layer over smaller elements and text.

Create the Wallpaper Layers

Adobe Photoshop offers dozens of tools and hundreds of options for creating your personalized wallpaper. All of them are conveniently accessible through menus around the border of the Photoshop design area. Here are some of the many options you can use:

Import an Image or Graphic To The Wallpaper

This can be a personal photograph, a piece of artwork or something you downloaded off of the Internet. Once it is imported, you can change the size, color and position. You can also create all sorts of cool effects like making a real person look semi transparent, like a sketch or like a cartoon.

Wallpaper Shapes

Click the custom shapes tool to make your own shapes. These can be typical circles, squares and triangles or they can be complex designs. They are remarkably easy to design. Photoshop allows you to set points for the shape to follow. These can be straight line angles or complex curves.

Wallpaper Colors

Click the paint bucket tool to add color. Simply clicking inside a shape fills it with the selected color. You can also use the tool to fill an entire background with color. Photoshop also offers the option of fun patterns like stripes, polka dots, leopard spots, or just about anything else you can think of.

Wallpaper Text

Click the button with the big "T" on it to add text to the wallpaper. You can select from dozens of different font styles and point sizes for letters. Click the arrow next to styles box to choose style for text. These are fun and come in varieties like shiny gold, manhole cover and granite. You can select several styles and layer them. Position the text anywhere and any way you want.

Wallpaper Gradient Editor

Click and hold the paint bucket tool to access the gradient editor. Use it to change how the color, shading and texture changes. This can be applied to a background, a shape or text. Photoshop offers a myriad of different creative and fun gradient options.

Merge the Wallpaper Layers

Once you have built all the layers of your wallpaper, merge the layers together. Access the layer menu from the main menu and select Merge Layers. Be sure to only merge the elements you created and not the background layer. This way you have the option of chaging the background color later.

Repeat Your Design In Your Wallpaper

Photoshop gives you the option to repeat a design you create in a way you designate. Go to the Layer menu and select New Fill Layer and then Pattern. There you can choose the pattern you want and designate the design you created. You can change the size of the image using the sliding scale. Click OK and save the repeating pattern as a JPG file. This way you can keep the repeating wallpaper design separate from the original in case you want to try something else later.

Post Your Wallpaper

Tell your computer to fill its screen with your new wallpaper. Go to Control Panel on a PC or System Preferences on a Mac. Select Appearances or Desktop & Screen Saver. Locate the file name of your new wallpaper, select it and click Apply. You wallpaper will now be seen on the background of your computer screen.
