eHow Earnings and Residual Writing Income

eHow payments for online content

You can increase eHow earnings and build up your own monthly residual writing income, one article at a time.

My eHow payment for July 2008 was $500, and August was $617. These payments were residual income on online content I'd written weeks or even months previously. Did you know you, too, can earn money writing online, even if you're new to freelance writing?

Many internet content sites and article directories, such as eHow, Associated Content, Helium, Squidoo and Hub Pages, offer revenue sharing programs for site users and writers. That means freelance writers can write an article once and get paid multiple times for their content as it continues to earn money for the site.

From research and experience, it seems that eHow is one of the best sites both for income potential and traffic. The site has been in existence since 1999, though it has changed hands several times. Now owned by Demand Media Inc., eHow hosts over 300,000 how-to articles on every imaginable topic.

Articles on eHow were written by freelance writers and editors, many through Writers Research Group or Demand Studios, while some work independently through the Writers Compensation program.

The popular Writers Compensation program at eHow was launched in 2007. While earnings criteria are undefined, anecdotal evidence suggests that there is very good income potential on the site. Many writers report earning an average of $1-$5 per article per month. Individual articles have earned as much as $800 in a month, according to one user whose timely how-to on the economic stimulus package ranked well on Google and received a high stream of traffic. Other articles earn ... nothing.

Following is a screen shot of my 2008 eHow earnings taken September 24, 2008, when I had 202 articles in my profile. July's payments were issued as $10 for a bonus and $500.56 for regular residuals.

The most important techniques to employ when writing eHow articles are good keyword usage and search engine optimization. Google seems to love eHow, but you have to build an article with good content and good keywords to please both the readers and the search engine.

Articles with pictures grab readers' attention and keep them on the page longer, as do actionable steps with sufficient details and tips. Including your keywords first in the title and then several times in the body is a good strategy to follow.

I provide in-depth detail as to my method and earnings in the eHow article Earn Passive Income Writing eHow Articles and in my more extensive eHow guide:Earn Passive Income on eHow.com: Residual Income for Web Content Writers
