Definition of Science Fiction
The precise definition of science fiction is a hotly debated topic amongst fandom. Broadly science fiction is a genre that covers many different media and which speculates about future societies and technology based on the societies and technology of today. However this definition is not all encompassing.
Origins of Science Fiction
Science fiction as we would currently recognize it did not come into being until the 19th century and did not in fact take its present form until the 20th century. However there are many works of literature prior to that time which contain elements of what we now consider to be science fiction.
