H. Hunter Handsfield, MD, is Senior Research Leader at the Battelle Memorial Institute's Centers for Public Health Research and Evaluation in Seattle, Washington, and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington Center for AIDS and STD. For 25 years directed the Sexually Transmitted Disease Control Program for Public Health - Seattle & King County. Dr. Handsfield has published or co-authored over 250 research papers, book chapters, and reviews on the diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology, and prevention of STDs and HIV infection, and a book, Color Atlas and Synopsis of Sexually Transmitted Diseases. He is former president of the American STD Association and the immediate past president of the International Society for STD Research. For three decades Dr. Handsfield has been consulted frequently by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on STD/HIV prevention strategy and policies and twice (1997-98, 2004-2005) worked at CDC as a Visiting Scientist.
