It is many hosts out there, and most of them are really bad and expensive. Its therefor a must to do some research before choosing where you want to host your website. The best way to find a good host is to search for recommend hosts on blogs and forums. But never rely on just one source. Many hosts write recommendations for themselves under anonymous nicks.

Linux hosts are cheaper and support more applications. If you don't know that you need Windows, go for Linux.

More is not necessary better. Cheap hosts with a lot of bandwidth is often quite slow because because they place so many users on the same server. Its also often limitations that you can't use the bandwidth for big files etc. If you need a lot of bandwidth choose a more expensive host plan or go for a dedicated web file hosting service like Amazon S3 if its static files you need hosting for (html, images, video, audio etc.).

Again more is not necessary better. Cheap host which offers a lot of space often have limitations on what you can use the space to. Here its not grated that you can hosts your video files or other big files. If you need a lot of space you better go off with a dedicated web file hosting service like Amazon S3.

Here you have to see what you actually need, but you don't need any. Instead you can configurate your domain/DNS to use other email hosting services. Some of them are even free e.g. Google Apps which is something like Gmail, Blogger.com, Google Talk/Jabber/XMPP and other Google Services for your domain.

This is the programming language most downloadable web apps is written in. Almost all Linux host offers this. You generally want version 5. Not all web apps runs on PHP version 4.

If you just need static html and images hosting, find a host that just offers that. They are generally a lot faster and cheaper.
