The Hereke Silk Carpets at first were hand knotted in the Ottoman Royal Factory in Hereke, which was established by the Ottoman Sultan Abdulmecid I. in 1844. He wished there were created the "finest carpets of the world" for his "biggest palace of the world", the Dolmabahçe Palace, wich in this time was built on the coast of the Marmara Sea.

For this reason the young Sultan Abdulmecid I. gathered the best artists of his Empire in Hereke to create designs, wich were seen never before. Only with that technology and the high density of the Turkisch double Knot it was possible to display the wonderful patterns so clearly that the viewer means to see a painting.

These luxurious masterpieces of hand knotting art from Hereke at first were produced exclusively for the Dolmabahçe Palace, later for the noblemens of the Ottoman Curt as an award of the Sultan and for the kings, princess and statesmen as an hostess gift. Only in the end of the 19th century it was allowed to some selected traders to sell a limited number of the Hereke Silk Carpets. After the first World War and the end of the Ottoman Empire the production of these luxurious Hereke Silk Carpets descented almost totally. Only in the 50th years of the 20th century some of the old master weavers started once more to knot these finest silk rugs.
