Of all the sad, classic movies that are guaranteed to make you cry that I am going to review - this one has got to be the most expensive movie in terms of tissue box purchase! In fact, if you really like genuinely-moving tear-jerking movies, then put in the DVD, get the handkerchiefs ready, turn off your cell-phone and lock the door! You are in for a long sad night! In fact, better get some chocs out and keep them handy 'cos you might need some comfort food as this is definitely one of those movies that make you cry!
Are you ready for the sorrowful movie tale of gorgeous brave young Harvard law student stands up to his dad to marry equally gorgeous sassy young Radcliffe music student in a movie story of sweet young love? The love, however, did not magically appear at first sight. The dark but impecunious Catholic beauty and the wealthy, Anglican golden-haired heir to millions spark off each other with bristling hostility at first, but the magnetic attraction soon wins through.
So far so good - Ryan O'Neal's character safely defies his father (Ray Milland) and 'gets his girl.' So far, so happy! The haunting music will make your heart ache because you are so pleased for them......until....a dark cloud looms, threatening to rob them of the happiness they have so bravely and so recently found in each other. If you are looking for movies that make you cry, then this is what is just about to happen!
After all, Oliver has risked everything to stay loyal to his sweetheart Jennifer, losing the love of a dear father and being disinherited from the family wealth. Unfortunately, poor Jennifer is quite literally that - poor! In similar vein to many other movies dealing with class issues, it seems that her family is not quite up to the standards that Oliver's father would like, being of the Italian/American working classes. Not to worry, they have their love for each other as riches. Just as well as the youngsters are now so poor that they cannot even afford Christmas cheer on a snowy festive eve in a city full of rich shoppers joyfully returning home with bags of designer shopping from the big exclusive stores. The sweet Christmas scenes remain a vivid memory that stand out from many other Christmas scenes in movies.
Still, Oliver does not regret his decision, and neither does the lucky Jenny. To hauntingly poignant music they ice-skate together in an unforgettably loving scene of laughter and falling over and even mange to pool a few dollars together to get a scrap of a Christmas tree for their garret! In fact, they are so blissfully happy together, that they even start to talk of having a beautiful little baby together - a sure-fire happy-ever-after formula for many classic movies.
It is then that the dark cloud starts to shadow their lives, and the audience realises that their happy time together which was so hard-won is to be cruelly cut short, and that this is not going to be one of those 'dream-come-true' movies. After trying for a baby for a while with no luck the couple are surprised as they are both so young. Jenny goes to the doctor. In a truly deeply shocking scene we learn that she might not have much time left with Oliver - she has Cancer. We feel that this is going to be one of those movies where we are taken on an emotional roller-coaster of suspense and unbearable pathos.

Tear-jerker lovers will love this movie as they watch it with its genre (Classic Movies) in mind and are prepared to enjoy it for what it has now become - a vintage sad classic movie from the seventies, directed by Arthur Hiller. Cynical media-savvy types may rightly point out that the DVD now seems a bit dated compared to the slick movies of today, but the elements which enable the audience to empathise with the emotionally painful and almost unbearably sad plight of the young sweethearts will surely never get stale. Movies that make you cry are very hard to make and to act as the sentimental mush pit is always looming. However, this seventies classic movie somehow manges to still tear at the heart-strings through the vintage filming and acting styles.
In fact, even some macho super-guys watching it with their own sweethearts have been known to unexpectedly well up and hurriedly leave the room during this one! Movies that make you cry just got to the guys1
The Famous 'Sorry' Sad Quote From The Love Story Classic Movie
Ever wondered where the popular line '..love means never having to say you're sorry..' comes from? Well, now you know - it was popularised by movies and TV shows. In the seventies, people were just getting used to the idea of 'verbalising emotional trauma' and 'taking responsibilty' for their emotions in a way we now take completely for granted., and see in sad movies all the time. But at the time, the quote was such a ground-breaker in a nutshell, that it was adopted by countless other media personalities including Charlie Brown. Today's voiciferous exponents might include The Simpsons.
