How to Create an Emergency Stockpile

A concise guide to quickly preparing for the worst

It is simple and inexpensive to put together a emergency stockpile that could save you and those you love.

It does not matter whether it is an earthquake, fire, pandemic flu or some type of human-caused disaster.  Everyone should store at least enough food and water to survive for a week.

Note: If you are concerned about Pandemic Flu, please see:
How to Prepare for Pandemic Flu for important additional items to purchase.

Critical Items

  1. Water: 25 x 1 liter bottled water containers, or prepare your own using clean plastic containers.   Water can be chemically disinfected for long-term storage by using 8 drops of liquid chlorine bleach per gallon.  Use Clorox or Purex type unscented bleaches. One teaspoon of bleach disinfects 18 liters (5 gallons) of water. This will kill bacteria and viruses and prevent the growth of microorganisms during storage.  Rotate on expiration date, or yearly for tap water.
  2. Food: Nonperishable items listed below
  3. Shelter: generally staying in your home is best.

Food Recommendations and maximum storage life[1]

  • White Rice (8 years)[2]
  • Dried Beans (8 years)
  • Peanut butter (2 years)
  • Dried milk (15 years)
  • Bisquick
  • Canned fruits or vegetables (> 50 years)
  • Sugar (> 50 years)
  • Dry pet food (if you have pets)
Warning: make sure that you store your food in a cool, dry location that is resistant to insects and rodents.

Other Recommended Items

  1. Good backpack - in case you need mobility
  2. Camping stove and fuel
  3. Sleeping bag(s)
  4. 12 gauge shotgun for hunting or 9mm handgun for outlaws
    • 100 rounds (shelf live = 20 years)
