An uncelebrated but essential tool to most audio recording and performances using a microphone is the microphone stand.
While microphones include hand held and lavalier (clip on types), most uses of microphones require a mic stand.
Microphone stands come in a number of configurations, the most common being straight stands, boom stands and desk stands. Each is designed to hold a microphone, using a device called a mic clip, so that the microphone can be positioned in the appropriate location and orientation for the best possible sound.
The straight stand comes in two configurations. The first uses a heavy base (usually round) and a veritcal tube that has the microphone attached at the top. In most straight stands the upright tube is adjustable (telescoping) in order to make height adjustments.
The straight stand is also made with a folding tripod base to increase portability.
The boom stand is made up of a straight stand with an adjustable arm affixed to the top. This arm, called a boom, allows the microphone to be positioned in a horizontal plane away from the mic stand base. A mic can be placed in a difficult to reach position (e.g. near a drum head) or be used to move the upright part of the stand away from the mic user (e.g. a singing guitar player) so that the mic stand doesn't inhibit movement by the user.
Boom stands are made in many different configurations.
Desk stands are short microphone stands intended for use on tabletops, desks, or podiums. The come in both adjustable and non-adjustable types (height) and allow a microphone to be attached at the top using a mic clip.
There are many accessories designed for use with microphone stands and most are equipped with a 5/8 inch threaded fitting so that they can be used on different styles of stands.
