When it comes to driving the Road to Hana on Maui, it's the journey, not the destination, that is the main attraction. There are few words that can describe the beauty of this drive with its cliffs cloaked in green and lush valleys bursting with waterfalls. Curves hug the coast and gaze over an ocean that stretches uninterrupted all the way to the Alaskan coastline. Couple that with black, red, and white sand beaches, a multitude of trails, and beautiful gardens and you’ve discovered the highway to heaven itself.
The Hana Highway stretches for 52 miles from the town of Pa'ia to just past the sleepy bay town of Hana. It continues on as the South Hana Highway encircling the "back side" of the volcano Haleakala and turning into the Pi'ilani Highway.
The Hana Highway has 56 one-lane bridges and 617 curves and turns. Just driving it is an adventure. The road, gravel at the time, was completed in the 1920s. Some of those famous one-lane bridges date back to 1910.
There are many interesting stops along the Hana Highway including Twin Falls, The Garden of Eden, Nahiku Landing and countless scenic overlooks.
Just past Hana is the world-famous Hamoa Beach, the Oheo Gulch (a series of natural lava pools fed by waterfalls) and Charles Lindbergh's grave. The landscape changes dramatically past the burial site. The windswept lava fields of the leeward (dry) side of Maui. Drivers will also glimpse the massive Kaupo Gap, an erosional valley on the side of Haleakala.
Considered one of the premiere drives in the country, the trip to Hana is a must see for most visitors to the island of Maui.
In October 2006, an earthquake off the coast of the Big Island damaged several bridges along the highway. Sections of the Pi'ilani Highway were closed for years to be repaired.
