The Definition of Marketing

A small business view of real marketing

Small business owners often search for a definition of marketing that makes more sense than the text book standard.

The title of this post is a question I field often. When I poll a room of small business owners I get lots of different answers, most, more or less, pointing to advertising or other lead generation activities.

To some extent the confusion comes from textbook definitions that don’t translate well to the real world. Here’s one from the American Heritage Dictionary. The commercial functions involved in transferring goods from producer to consumer

. That was helpful wasn’t it?

I like the definition at SmallBusiness.com, a great small business wiki, a little better. In plain and simple terms, marketing activities and strategies result in making products available that satisfy customers while making profits for the companies that offer those products.

But, for the small

business, here is the Duct Tape Marketing definition: Getting someone, who has a need, to know, like and trust you. Now, when you have a marketing system in place this expands to - getting someone, who has a need, to know, like, trust, contact and refer you.

Awareness and trust are it for the real world small business and unless you’ve got oodles of cash laying around to buy that through heart warming TV spots, you better get down in the trenches and figure out how to educate, give and build trust.

So, do a small business owner a favor and share this simple definition with them. It just might make marketing a little easier.

I like the additions: Contact and Refer You

Being a long time DTM disciple I have always agreed with you definition on Need, know , like and trust but the addition of contact and refer you brings the real essence of marketing t the forefront. What I mean by that is that the first definition is more strategic and passive. The contact and refer you is active and that is truly what marketing is about. Action!

Marketing is everything you do

I think a lot of companies miss the point that marketing is everything they do. It is how they dress, how their employees treat customers, their signage, the stores appearance, etc..... anything that makes an impression on your customer is a form of marketing.

Interesting take-

I've seen a lot of definitions of marketing, but this one is the best I've seen. It adds the element of relationship along with a defined path leading to success...aka commerce. It's interesting how you've captured the essence more succintly.

Great Defintion

Any small business needs people to like, trust, contact and refer them in order to succeed. Most start-ups don't have the resources to promote themselves, they need every person they come in contact with to become a spokesperson for the company.

Definition of marketing is changing

I like the Duct Tape Marketing definition of marketing. To reflect the importance of social media and other online tools (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, blogs etc.) used these days to market products and services, I would like to add one word to this definition: Getting someone, who has a need, to know, like, trust and follow you.
