France or French Republic (République Française) is a country located in western Europe. The population of France is called French people and the official language is French. The currency used to be the French Franc but was replaced by Euro (€) in 2002 as a result of the European monetary union sealed in the Maastricht treaty in 1992.

Geography

France borders Spain and Andora at south, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium at East.
 
Corsica, a large island in the Mediterranean sea, closer to Sardinia and continental Italy than continental France, is also a part of Metropolitan France.
 
France possesses overseas territories, whose inhabitants are French citizen having the same rights as Metropolitan inhabitants. If we except Adelie Land, a sector of the Antarctic continent, the largest one is French Guyana, bordering Surinam and Brazil in South America. One of the smallest and remotest ones is uninhabited Clipperton island off the coast of Mexico in the Pacific Ocean.

The capital of France is Paris, located in the center of the northern part of the country.

Institutions

The French president (Président de la République) is elected every 5 years (7 years before 2000). The current president is Nicolas Sarkozy, elected in June 2007 after one septennat (7 year term) and one quinquennat (5 year term) of presidency of Jacques Chirac.

The French flag is blue, white and red vertical stripes.
