Dr. Kaveh Shojania is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, where he divides his time between seeing patients on the internal medicine service at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and conducting research on strategies for improving patient safety and healthcare quality. A substantial component of Dr. Shojania’s research has involved the application of the framework of evidence-based medicine to the fields of patient safety and quality of improvement.
His work has appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and Annals of Internal Medicine, among other leading journals. Dr. Shojania has also written a book for a general audience on medical error and patient safety (co-authored with Dr. Robert M. Wachter of the University of California San Francisco). This book, Internal Bleeding: The Truth Behind America's Terrifying Epidemic of Medical Mistakes, has sold approximately 50,000 copies and received excellent reviews in the New York Times, Baltimore Sun, San Francisco Chronicle, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the British Medical Journal.
Dr. Sunita Mulpuru (co-author with Dr. Shojania of the Knol on Evidence-based Medicine) obtained her medical degree from McMaster University, seen by many as the institution most responsible for the development of the field of evidence-based medicine. Dr. Mulpuru is currently completing her postgraduate residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Ottawa, after which she will likely pursue further training in clinical epidemiology.
