Ads in Knol

How to use AdSense within Knol

Displaying relevant advertising alongside your knol provides useful information to your readers, and may generate revenue for yourself.

Adding ads to a knol

If you would like to display ads on a knol, go to My profile>Preferences and select the AdSense tab. The first time you do this you will be redirected to a special settings page with instructions on how to create an AdSense account, or associate an existing account with your Knol profile. The process is very simple and you will be asked to confirm your setup via email. It may take a few weeks for ads to appear on your knol the first time you do this. Participation in AdSense is not guaranteed, and is subject to the AdSense Terms
and Conditions and AdSense Program Policies. After you got your AdSense approval, you can put ads on or off for each separate Knol by choosing Settings in the right column or change the default behaviour.

Caution: You need to have at least one published knol when you request to turn on AdSense. We hope to be able to remove this restriction in the future.

Removing ads from your knol

To remove ads from your knol, select no ads in the Settings > General menu. Ads will stop showing on your knol.

I just added ads to my knols but I can't see any when I view them

If you just recently added ads for the first time, it may take a few weeks for your ads to appear. You can check the status of your AdSense account in the Settings>AdSense menu. Keep in mind that there is no guarantee that ads will be shown every time your knol is viewed. No ads will be displayed if none were considered relevant enough to your knol, for instance.

Where can I find more information about the AdSense program?

Much more information on the AdSense Program is available here.

Ads only show on some of my knols, not all of them

Each knol can have is own "ads on" or "ads off" setting. To turn on ads for all of your knols, if that is what you want, do this:
  • Go to Settings, then click on the AdSense panel. You should see your approved AdSense account there. Look for the checkboxes at the bottom. Check both boxes:
    • Set this as default for all your future knols
    • Apply to all your existing knols.
  • Then press Save. Wait for a bit while it processes your existing knols.

How do multiple owners split AdSense revenue?

If a knol has multiple owners, AdSense revenue currently goes to just one person. Usually it is the person who first created the knol, but if another owner resets the knol's AdSense settings, that new owner receives the revenue instead. We do not at this time support multi-way revenue sharing.

FAQs about Knol AdSense

Can I control where on the page the ads show?

No, this is currently the same for all knols. Ads show on the right hand side below the categories, and on the bottom of the article above the comments. We may change the placement of ads in the future.

I am using the same AdSense account for several websites, including Knol. How can I track the Knol earnings?

At this time, we do not have the ability to assign a separate AdSense channel to your knols. We will investigate doing that at some point in the future.

Where can I report bad ads, or make comments or suggestions about ad quality?

We cannot provide support or feedback regarding ads content or quality here. Please visit the AdSense Program support pages here.

Adsense still there after removing

I followed this step to remove an ad from this knol -- http://knol.google.com/k/bob-reece/history-of-the-warrior-markers/3dzjja4fs26pw/2# --

"Removing ads from your knol
To remove ads from your knol, select no ads in the Settings > General menu. Ads will stop showing on your knol."

The ads are still there. Does it take some time before I'll no longer see the ads in my knol?

Thanks,
Bob

Adsense is not enough

The initial business model for Knol, set some 18 months ago, would have included a line about the income stream from the Adsense system being sustainable for both Google Knol and the Knol Authors. I would encourage a survey of Knol Authors to determine if the Adsense revenue to date has added to their motivation to write quality Knols. I will certainly do one and would be happy to pass on the results. I suspect that the survey will bear out the word on the street, that the Adsence scheme has been a disappointment for most Knol Authors from an income point of view.

Sure, being altruistic is a noble cause ... but so is providing for your family. In summary we need to generate more income streams for Knol author families and for the Knol Project generally, I would suspect. One suggestion is this that we sell advertising or banner ads down the side of our Knols.

Under the current format the bottom of the Adsence Box on the right hand side would represent an article length of about 800 words or just 400 words with added media. This may have been the expected target in the initial model, however, the standard for quality Knols that has emerged on the site is at least twice that length with the average being up to four times as long. Shorter Knol will just have to deal with the blank content space until the comments are reached.

This 'longer than expected Knol' leaves copious amounts of online real estate to the right of our content that is not working for the Knol Team or for the Knol Author - just an endless blank space. How about selling this space to banner ads and allowing the author to benefit from the increase income stream?

I believe that by keeping the ads. out of the Knol content and placing them on the side, does not detract from the reader experience at all, because the two are viewed separately by the reader and evaluated under a different values system.

Please consider.

Delay between Knol and AdSense?

I recently signed up for AdSense, I just received the conformation email from AdSense and was able to view my AdSense account. However, when I try to set ads for a knol I get this message.

"Your account is still pending. Please check your email for a message from Google AdSense and follow the instructions within the email to activate your account. You will not accrue revenue until you do this."

I already received this email and registered the accoun? Is there simply a delay between the account creation and it being shared with Knol?

Yahoo medicinal brand adverts?

I have seen some very good medicine related adverts in yahoo which grab your attention.
I like the way the drug "Humira" is advertised there with a photograph of the drug containing box or the story of a patient on the drug. The adverts take you to the presribing information, drug web site or company web site and one can scroll down to check the list of adverse drug reactions, dose, coditions etc.

I hope to see such adverts at my knols as Humira is mentioned in several of my knols.

I hope that your adsense team can improve on the current ads at knols as well as yahoo?
