Embedding objects in your knol

YouTube videos, calendars, and more

A quick guide on how to embed videos, calendars, images, spreadsheets, and more into your knol.

Embedding objects in the body of your knol is a great way to help illustrate your expertise and can make your content more attractive and useful to readers. Pertinent videos, compelling images, and engaging spreadsheet forms can enhance the interactive appeal of your knol.

Getting Started

  1. Enter the edit mode of your knol by clicking the Edit tab in the top-right of the knol.
  2. Once you're in edit mode, find a good location for your object and click to place your cursor in that location.
  3. Click the Insert button in the Knol toolbar at the top of your screen and select from the list of objects that appears. For instructions on embedding specific objects, click the name of the object below:
Important: we support only  the listed embedding types, and only using the tools built in to Knol. You cannot embed third party gadgets, custom searches, or Javascript components.

Embedding Tips

Once you've embedded rich content in your knol, the tips below will help you format your embedded object and text to put the finishing touches on your knol.

  • Including a title for your object will create an entry for your object in your knol's table of contents.
  • You can change the wrapping style and alignment of the object so that it stands alone or is surrounded by text in your knol.
  • To change the properties of your object, return to edit mode, select the object, then click Properties in the blue prompt that appears.
  • Select and adjust the size of an object to optimize the professional appearance of your knol. For example, avoid using a small embedded object to fill a large portion of space in your knol.
  • Make sure any documents you embed are published. For Google documents, make sure to select "Automatically re-publish when changes are made" so you won't have to republish your document for it to show in your knol.
  • View your embedded object by clicking Save then Close in the Knol toolbar. This will return you to view mode.
  • Try viewing your knol while logged out of your account to make sure it will appear correctly to readers.
  • To delete an object from your knol, select the object and click Remove in the blue prompt that appears. You can also simply select and delete an object as you would text in your knol.

Images

This option includes all our familiar image options (see our help knol on inserting images). Choose the image source, select your image and you are done!

Uploaded images
Use this option to upload an image you have on your local drive to knol. You can also select previously uploaded images.

Web address (URL)
Use an image already hosted on the web by entering its URL.

New Yorker Cartoons
Use one of the many famous cartoons from the New Yorker Store in your knol. Nothing helps bring out the seriousness of an issue like a cartoon. Learn more from our Help with our New Yorker Cartoon Bank knol.

Picasa Web Albums Slideshow

Show an entire album or series of images without taking up valuable space in your knol. Add a Picasa Web Album to your knol and it will run as a slideshow.

To add your slideshow to knol, select the Picasa Web Slideshow option from the Insert menu and copy and paste the URL of your album in the prompt. Select additional options for your slidesho, for example allowing the captions you've added with each image to show in your slideshow, and click Save. Save your knol and go to view mode to see your slideshow in action. If you need to make changes, return to edit mode, select the object, and click Properties.

YouTube Video and Google Video

Sometimes the best way to explain a concept is to show it in practice. Now you can enhance your knol by creating a YouTube video and embedding it in your knol.

To embed a video, select the appropriate video option from the Insert menu and copy and paste the URL of your video in the prompt. Once you've selected your video title and options, click Save to finish adding your video. To view it, save your knol and go to view mode. If you want to change any of the video properties, simply return to edit mode, select the video, and click Properties.

Sample video: US presidential debate

Google Calendar

Do you have a timeline you want to show your readers?  Are there future events related to your topic you want readers to be aware of? Set up a Google Calendar and embed it in your knol -- any updates you make to your calendar will automatically appear in the embedded calendar in your knol.

Once you select Calendar from the Insert menu, copy and paste the URL of your calendar into the prompt, and change your settings as necessary.  Click Save when you're finished and go to view mode to see your calendar in the knol. To change a property of your calendar, return to edit mode, select the video, and click Properties.

Document, Presentation, or Spreadsheet

Want to add a shared document from Google Docs to your knol? Simply select the type of document to embed and choose the specific document you'd like to include in your knol. If you're not the owner of the document, presentation, or spreadsheet you want to embed, you can still copy and paste the URL of the document in the text field at the bottom of the prompt. Once you've selected a document, fill in the options for displaying it in your knol and click Save. Like all the other embedded objects, check out your document in view mode. To make changes, select the object in edit mode and click Properties.

Now when you update your Google document, your knol will automatically pick up the changes. Keep in mind that your document must be published for the world to see it. You can select "Automatically re-publish when changes are made" so you won't have to republish your document for it to show in your knol.

Google Maps

When describing a location a map can do wonders to express your point.  Simply choose the Map option in the Insert drop down.  Find the location you want on the map interface and place helpful markers as needed.

Googleplex

Spreadsheet Form

In addition to Knol's built-in collaboration, comment, and review features, a spreadsheet form can be a useful way to solicit specific feedback from your readers. When readers submit their responses to your form, the data appears in a spreadsheet for you to review.

To create a spreadsheet form, go to Google Docs and create a spreadsheet. Use the Form tab in Docs to create a spreadsheet form . Once you create the form, return to your knol and select Spreadsheet Form from the Insert menu. Copy and paste the URL of the published form into the prompt. Your readers will be able to fill out the form and submit it to your spreadsheet.

* Note: when a reader submits a form and clicks refresh in their browser it will want to repost the data into your spreadsheet. If you want to do some interactive polling, it might be best to have one knol take in the data, and another that shows the results to limit this repetition of data.

FAQs about Embeddings

How can I move an embedding around, to be at some place in the text?

A: When you are in the editor, an embedding turns into an image. Like any other image in Knol, you can move it around in several ways.

  1. You can click-and-drag on it. While you are dragging it, your cursor should change appearance to show that you are dragging the image. Move it to the location you want the embedding to be in, and release the button. If you need to scroll to a different place in the document, then you can scroll by moving your mouse cursor to almost the very top or bottom of the text window. (If you drag outside of the text window, the knol contents will not scroll.
  2. You can use cut-and-paste.
    • Select from before the embedding to after the embedding. (Just selecting the embedding itself may not work in some browsers, as doing so fails to capture some of the HTML necessary for the image to be treated as an embedding.)
    • Cut (Cntl+X on some systems) to remove the embedding. Move to where you want to insert it, and use Paste (Cntl+V).
  3. If neither of those methods works, you still have control over where the video appears. You can go into HTML mode. The embedding will be an IMG tag. The following, for example, is the HTML form of the YouTube embedding that occurs earlier in this document.
    <IMG id=12425515148645516 style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 5px auto 5px 0px; TEXT-ALIGN: left" height=355 src="http://www.google.com/chart?cht=d&amp;chdp=sites&amp;chl=%5B%5BYouTube+Video%27%3D16%27f%5Cbf%5Chv%27a%5C%3D210%270%27%3D209%270%27dim%27%5Cbox1%27b%5CDBD9BB%27fC%5CDBD9BB%27eC%5C15%27sk%27%5C%5B%22Sample+video%2358+US+presidential+debate%22%27%5Dh%27a%5CV%5C%3D12%27f%5Cbf%5C%5DV%5Cta%5C%3D211%27%3D0%27%3D210%27%3D352%27dim%27%5C%3D211%27%3D0%27%3D210%27%3D352%27vdim%27%5Cbox1%27b%5Cva%5CFFFEF0%27fC%5CDBD9BB%27eC%5Csites_youtube%27i%5Chv-0-0%27a%5C%5Do%5CLauto%27f%5C" props="showBorder:true;showBorderTitle:true;borderTitle:Sample video#58 US presidential debate" type="youtube" origsrc="DvdfO0lq4rQ">
Within HTML mode, you can select that image tag, cut it, move to where you want it, and paste it back in. If you are unfamiliar with HTML, you may need to study it and make sure you understand its syntax and the commonly used tags in order to do this correctly.

Can I embed Javascript? How about Custom Search Engine, PDF documents, or Gadgets?

Sorry -- we support only  the listed embedding types, and only using the tools built in to Knol. You cannot embed third party gadgets, custom searches, or Javascript components.

We will consider adding support for additional embedded objects in the future, but we cannot pre-announce when or if specific embeddings might be added.

How about "FastFlip"

Just came across Google FastFlip. Linking to it is good but what a great benefit it would be for readers, if we could embed a scrolling screen of FastFlips in our Knols ... just like Presentations and Picasa. Just a thought. http://fastflip.googlelabs.com/

Embedding presentations broken

When I try to embed this presentation:

http://docs.google.com/present/view?id=dcfhkkbn_247gv6qs9cb

I get an error message:

"The URL you entered is not supported."

Presentations that are already embedded are fine, but I can't create any new embeddings.

I think that embedding/sharing functionality has recently been improved(??) at the Google apps end - but this seems to have broken the ability to play nice with knol.

Thanks - Norman

embedded objects unavailable

In our earlier version 30, the slide show and video were embedded and visible to readers and us. In later and current version the slide show and video do not show up and there were problems getting a new slide show saved and printed in Docs.

Problems with PP Slides and Docs Slides

There are lots of problems in importing slides from Documents into knols and PP slides into Docs Presentations. A simple cut and paste system will be great.

Is there a way to import Audio Classical music into knols?
