FAQ on Knol Contests, Challenges, and Badges

Contests and Challenges

What is the difference between a contest, and a challenge?

Contests, such as Knol for Dummies, are events judged by the third party sponsoring the contest.

Challenges, such as Holiday Crafts,  are events where knol.google.com encourages authors to write on specific themes. There are no awards or prizes for participating in challenges, beyond the ordinary benefits of having your articles appear on http://knol.google.com.

How can I know if my knol is a part of an event?

We put a badge on your knol, indicating what challenge or contest it is in. See the red box in the image to the right.

OK, so how do I put my knol into a contest so that it receives a badge and is considered as a candidate?

There are two ways to enter a contest.
  1. Create a new knol into the contest, by pressing the button on the contest page, or
  2. Take an existing knol and put it into a contest by going to Settings > Events, then selecting the event name.

Oops, I didn't want to join the event. What do I do?

You have several choices, depending on how emphatic you feel:
  1. Just to the right of the contest badge is a "remove" button. Click on that, and you will be removed from the contest.
  2. Unpublish your knol . It will be removed from the contest, and it will not appear in search results.
  3. You may have entered an event accidentally, by clicking on a button without specifically intending to write an entry. Just delete your knol. Once deleted, it is gone. You will not be able to retrieve it.

Where are the past events?

Will you have future events?
Quite likely, but we cannot pre-announce what they will be.

FAQs about Badges

A small percentage of Knols and authors may receive badges either for participating in events, or for being highly ranked according to certain statistics or algorithms.

What badges are there?

Here is a list of knol badges.

Please let me know why 'Top pick knol award' was taken away from my knol?

Top pick awards are determined by a formula, not an individual human decision. Whether any particular knol has an automatic badge or not can fluctuate at any time, depending on many factors, including changes to the algorithms, visits, ratings or reviews received from other users, and the number of other knols published during the time interval since the badges were last updated.

The "Top Viewed"  award is there on my Knol, but gone when I see it in search!?

We have hundreds or thousands of new knols arriving every day, so the statistics used to generate them are constantly changing.

Also, there are indexing delays in moving information between knols and the search indexes -- so a document may appear temporarily different in one view as compared to another. (If the discrepancy is large or long lasting, please report it as a bug.)

How many badges do you give out? Is it just 800?

The number may change over time, but at the moment less than 1% of knols receive automatic badges.

Some authors have reported that we only give out 800 of each kind of badge. That is not true -- but we do at this present time only return up to 800 results to any search. To find more than 800 results, you have to slice the search into smaller groups, using either keywords, date restrictions, language restrictions, etc. If you do that, you can dig deeper than the 800 limit.

Can you make the badges more stable? They come and go, and losing a badge is exasperating!

We appreciate your feedback -- and your patience. We will investigate making changes the badges in order to make them more informative to readers and more satisfying to authors.

I published a Knol Collection, and the next day I lost my Top Pick Author badge!

Sorry, this is a bug. You currently are penalized in the badge competitions if you publish collections. We will fix this!

'Top Viewed Author Award' sort by setting

I still think that the 'Sort by' in the search toolbox for the 'Top Viewed Author Award' is incorectly set to 'Page View' when it should be 'Relevance'.

Top Pick Author Award - research and commentary

Please see the episode entitled Top Pick Author Badge for English Knols (6 August 2009) in our team Knol, http://knol.google.com/k/krishan-maggon/knol-site-metrics-reveal-good-bad-ugly/3fy5eowy8suq3/42#view.

There are six questions in the episode and we'd like to hear Knol Help's position on each. Thanks,

Peter, Krishan and Murry

Top Viewed Author Award - change option

I think your option selection in the Search Toolkit for Top Viewed Author Award should be changed to - Sort by 'Relevance' and not 'Page Views' as it is currently set.
