Aidi release comments
1 - Great to see some dynamics happening in the 'Top Pick' Knol/Author awards. As a reader and contributor to Knol since its public launch, I agree that about 95% of the top hundred 'Top Pick' authors deserve to be there. Some tweaking still needs to be done however, like the case of sebastien R. Master Student - Aerospace Engineering, Belgium being currently (5 Nov 09) the #3 ranked Top Pick Knol author even though he is yet to write his first Knol. Same goes for Chrissy K who while ranked #9 has not yet contributed a Knol.
2 - The new 'Link' button comes pre-highlighted and ready for 'copy & paste' action yet the more important 'Citation' link needs to still be manually selected. Maybe one for the next upgrade.
3 - I am not sure about the appropriateness of the algorithm choice for the new 'highest rated' tab, given that the top ten places are taken by the one author who may have had the benefit of some class loyalty in the initial ratings. I think that the following algorithm delivers a more appropriate outcome for the tag's 'promise'.

Taking it one step further, it would be great if on clicking 'cite this knol' that the citation is pre-displayed as selected and so only requiring a right click 'copy&paste' by the user.

Google Maps URL Link not working.
However, I could not get the URL link to work in the Insert Maps window. i.e. I create a Map in Google Maps and then when I try and copy the URL from Google Maps into the Insert window in Knol, I get the error message that the "URL is not supported". The map works fine if it is created and formated in the Knol insert window ... but not using the copied URL option. Bug or am I missing something?
Thanks for your feedback but we are not able to reproduce your issue. We have tested on FF3, Chrome, and IE7 and inserting a map using the Map URL link works w/o issue. Here are the steps we followed:
1) go to maps.google.com
2) search for some location (in this example, I searched for fisherman's wharf, san francisco, ca)
3) once location is found, click on "Link" in the right hand side of the page
4) copy the URL provided in the "Paste link in email or IM" field. It looks like this:
http://maps.google.c
5) go to your knol, click on Insert > Map
6) paste the URL into the field that reads "Or paste a Google Maps link here"
7) click Select
8) click Save
Result: Map appears in your knol
Is there any other information you can provide us? Can you give us the Map URL you are using? Do you have this issue in all browsers/OS configurations?
Thanks!
EditSaveCancelDeleteDeleteBlock this userReport abusive commentHide report window
Yeah that is the process I followed although I think you need to make clear that it is the "email or IM" URL that should be selected not the "Paste HTML to embed in website" URL. A non-tech. person, like our typical Knol author, would probably guess the latter was the more appropriate URL.
On further attempts, I used Chrome to make the map and edit my Knol but the error message remains the same - 'URL not supported' Here is the link using Chrome that did not work as a link:
http://maps.google.c
I also tried to create the map and edit my Knol using IE7 and but I got the same error message. Here is the link using IE7 that did not work:
http://maps.google.c
However, creating the map and editing my Knol in Firefox 3.5 I got the successful result you describe above. Interestingly, the URL created by Firefox 3.5 was also successful at importing the map into my Knol while browsing in Chrome and IE7. Here it the link created by Firefox that did work;
http://maps.google.c
Still struggling.
BTW - I was able to get your example to import successfully into my Knol. I'm no code breaker but I do note the similarity with my successful FF3.5 in the "37.0625" code whereas the other unsuccessful links include "25.335448". Maybe something?
