Knol Collections

Guide to using and viewing collections in knol.

What is a collection?

Common uses of collections
  • Books - each chapter a knol
  • Journals
  • Writing contests
  • Top-ten lists
  • Directories
A collection is an easy way to group knols together and link to them.  A collection looks like a knol with most of its content being a list of related knols.  This list is sortable and searchable.

How do I create one?

Click on the "Write a knol" button and select the option to create a collection.  You can also, from any knol, click the "Collect" link and start a new collection that way.

How can I add more knols to my collections?

Once you have a collection, there are two common ways to add more knols to it.  First, when visiting a knol that you want to add to any of your existing collections simply click on the "Collect" link on top of that knol. A dialog box will then allow you to select the collection you want to add it to.

The other option is to start with your collection and clicking on the "Submit a knol to this collection" link that appears at the top of the knol list. A dialog box will then help you find the knol you want to add to the current collection.

You can remove a knol from a collection by clicking "Edit this knol", and using the "x" on the top right corner of each listed item.

You can reorder a collection by clicking "Edit this knol" and changing the numbers shown to the left of the knol list.

Is there a limit on how large collections can be?

We do not have a strict limit on how many knols can be in a collection.

If your collection is large -- 800 or more knols -- then you will not be able to page through the entire collection. Instead, explore the collection using search and sorting.

I already have a knol with a list of links. Can I convert it into a collection?

No.  You will have to start a collection from scratch.

Can I change how my collection list looks and how the knols it contains are sorted?

Yes, visit our Knol Collection Display Settings help page for more information.

How do I search just within a collection?

While viewing a collection, the search box on the top right corner of the page gives the option to search within the collection or search all of knol.

How can I find out if my knol is in a collection?

On the right hand side of your knol there is a link "Search for uses of this page ".  Click on the link and it will have an option to look for collections that have collected your knol.

Someone put my knol into a collection that I don't want to be a part of. What can I do about it?

Anyone can create a web page that hyperlinks to any other web page. Adding a knol to a collection is not much different -- in principle anyone can collect any knol they like, for any purpose, without asking permission. However, if the collection as a whole is offensive, you may use the Report inappropriate content. Collections must follow the same Content Policy and Terms of Service guidelines as do ordinary knols. See moderated collections for special rules regarding this type of collections.

How remove knol from collection?

HI
You can remove a knol from a collection by clicking "Edit this knol", and using the "x" on the top right corner of each listed item. I did not find "X" on my collection http://knol.google.com/k/georgian-knols/knol-directory/1h9y67w24ewf8/27#view. Is it another way to remove knol?

Why collections, not simple Knols with links?

Why to use collections instead of a regular Knol with a list of links?

Well, there are one advantage, the possibility to search all Knols in a collection. There are also possibility to sort a collection in a different order, but this should be not done with books having established certain reading order.

But are there more advantages for writing a book as a collection rather than as a simple Knol?

I'm writing a book in Knols. Should I use collections or not?

Need for a Knol Help Collection

One valuable feature of the collections option is the ability to just search the one collection for an answer to a search query.

With that in mind, I think it would be a great value-add for the Knol Community, if Knol Help were to create a collection of all their instructional Knols. This would allow us and new authors to just do a search of all Knol Help's Knols, to find the targeted 'correct' answers to our questions.

How to keep order of Collection?

It seems currently the newly added knols are getting added at top of the knol collection.
I would like to keep the existing order of collection untouched while adding a new knol to the collection.
Is there anyway to force the newly collected knol to add at bottom of the collection?

eHow- poor quality content gets badges

It is difficult to believe that poor quality health content (without references, clinical evidence or results) from unknown authors and unknown qualifications gets quality badges. Reflects poorly on the google algorithm and the knol team endorsement. Incidently I have 5 collections

Collections Coming under Heavy Justified Criticism

The authors of Knol Site Metrics Reveal the Good, Bad and Ugly (http://knol.google.com/k/krishan-maggon/knol-site-metrics-reveal-good-bad-ugly/3fy5eowy8suq3/42#) have issued an opinion on Moderated Collections in a fresh episode. The thrust of our episode is simply this: Moderated Collections need their own award system. They should not be poaching Top Pick Author and Top Pick Knol badges. That change is egregiously unfair to authors.

The absurdity is amplified by one example: an eHow collection that has earned a Top Pick badge contains 13 Knols, none of which has earned a badge from the readership. This collection and many others DO NOT merit awards, much less awards taken away from authors to be given to a list instead.

Peter, Krishan and I appeal to you for a quick fix.

'Q' badges for collections? I don't agree.

The latest change to the algorithm that awards 'Q' badges for Knols, has gone over the top in awarding them to collections. It appears that nearly every collection created in the past month has been given one, even though they have just a handful of pageviews. This allocation has had a major impact on Top Author and Top Pick Knol lists and for me is incorrectly awarding them.

I personally do not think that collections should qualify for 'Q' badges at all. It is a bit like allowing a bookstore that simply collects the 'best of the best' to compete with their authors for the Noble Prize in Literature. For me, 'Q' badges should be kept exclusively for authors who contribute valuable original work to the Knol Library and should not be awarded to publishers who simply take those works and gather them into a collection.

I believe that collections should only be ranked by 'most viewed' and should not be included in the competition for 'Q' badges.

Untitled

I'm not sure if some of the earlier issues (dilution of Q award stat by collections - see my comment 25 May) have been fixed yet - some clarification on this would be appreciated.

To help promote the collection concept you might consider featuring some collections on the knol homepage.

Swine Flu Collection and Discussion Board

Some authors have tried to profit from the topic by putting up collection and discussion forum. These authors being ignorent of the subject under discussion have missed the few good knols on the subject. Both of these have listed and picked up junk, fraud or misleading Swine flu knols. Thus low quality knols get visibility and stamp of approval from these non health authors. Although Wikipedia article on the subject is not very good or authoritative, most of the existing Swine flu knols are poor or low quality. Thus collections are being used to accumulate low Q content
