A moderated collection is a special type of Knol collection that lets creators of the collection have more control over the knols that appear in it. Here are the main differences:
- Unlike regular collections, a knol can only be added to a moderated collection if it's submitted by the knol's author. Knols can only belong to one moderated collection at a time.
- Depending on the type of moderation chosen for the collection, collection owners may have editing rights to the knols in their collections.
- Collection owners can apply visual styles to knols in their collection.
Create a moderated collection
Follow these steps to create a moderated collection:
- In order to create a moderated collection, you must first have a website that's verified in Google Webmaster Tools. This helps knol authors who are interested in contributing to your collection learn more about you. See instructions for adding and verifying a site in Google Webmasters Help Center.
- Make sure you're signed in to Knol with your Google Account username and password by clicking Sign in at the top right corner of the page. (If you see your email address, you're already signed in.)
- Click Write a knol.
- Select the option 'Create a new collection of knols.'
- Select the 'Moderated Collection' checkbox.
- Select the type of moderation for your collection. There are three types of moderation. The amount of control the authors of the collection have over the knols in the collection increases going down this list.
- Author-Centric
As the collection owner, you won't have extra control over the knols in your collection. Select this type if you don't care whether knols can be modified by their original authors after being added to your collection. - Shared-Authorship
As the collection owner, you can make edits to the text of knols in your collection, as if you're a co-author of the knols. The original author(s) can also make changes freely. - Moderator-Centric
This type of collection gives the most power to its moderators. Once a knol is accepted into a collection, any modification submitted by the original authors of the knol will have to be approved by a moderator before it takes effect. - Click Continue.
- Choose your verified website from the drop-down menu.
- Click Create Collection.
Your moderated collection has been created. Go ahead and add knols to your new collection or customize the appearance of your collection.
Customize your collection's appearance
In addition to the usual collection display settings, as an owner of a moderated collection, you can customize the look of the knols in the collection. Follow these steps:- Go to your collection and click the Settings link on the right-hand side of the collection (it appears next to 'You have permission to manage this collection').
- In the 'Collection theme' section, select the checkboxes for the visual effect you want to apply:
- Use a custom logo
Swap the Knol logo for your own. In the dialog box that opens after you select this checkbox, click Choose file, select any JPG, GIF, or PNG file from your computer, then click Apply changes. Make sure the image isn't copyrighted and follows our content policy.
- Select background color
Change the white background color into a color that matches your logo or website. In the dialog box that opens after you select this checkbox, select the color you want to use, then click OK.
- Select highlight color
Change the highlighting color to coordinate with your background color. In the dialog box that opens after you select this checkbox, select the color you want to use, then click OK.
- Use a custom logo
- Click Save changes.
- A knol can belong to only one moderated collection at a time
- Only the original author of a knol can add his or her knol to a moderated collection.
If you want to add a knol that you authored to a moderated collection that you don't own, simply go to the collection you want to submit your knol to and click Submit a knol to this collection. The collection owner will be notified that you've added your knol to his or her collection.
Remove knols from a moderated collection
Except for Moderator-centric collections, knol authors can leave a collection at any point. If you're a knol author, follow these steps to remove your knol from a moderated collection:- Visit your knol.
- Click Settings on the right-hand side of the collection (it appears next to 'You have permission to manage this collection').
- In the General tab, find the section called 'Moderated collection membership'.
- Click Remove from collection.
Moderated collection owners can edit their knol list just like any other collection owners.

Translated Knols - A Kink In The System?
For the reasons Peter Baskerville has outlined below, I am trying to safeguard my knols by placing them in a series of Moderated Collections. To my surprise - and alarm - I was attempting to add one of them:
http://knol.google.c
There is no indication that it is part of any moderated collection on the knol itself.
However, a translated adaptation IS part of a German Moderated Collection hosted by Andreas Kemper of knols awaiting translation.
http://knol.google.c
Surely, the two are separate entities and must be free to sit in separate collections.
I am intending to create foreign language collections as well, often with translated/adapted versions of knols originally written in English, so this will be a recurring issue. These knols will not be exact copies of the original, they will feature customised and localised content both textually and in terms of videos etc
I think there's another kink in the system here that needs ironing out.
Thanks a lot,
Garry Jenkins
I hope this helps,

Now I feel really dumb! I completely forgot about that unpublished first attempt at a Mod Collection. It's buried deep in my backlist. Really sorry to have bothered you - but also glad to hear that I will be free to do language-based collections as well. Thanks very much. Best, Garry

Serious flaw in Moderated Collections
Both these attributes can be 'worked around' by using a "Moderated Collection" to collect "Open Collections". At present, everyone can take my Knols, collect them in a Open Collection and then include these Open Collections in a Moderated one. My Knol's inclusion in the moderated collection (via the Open one) gives my implied support for a publisher that I may not respect.
For example - Someone can take all the PLoS Knols, put them in an Open Collection and then included that Open Collection in a Moderated one, creating a replica of the original.
Someone's already done it -
http://knol.google.c
To close this back door and give authors control over the Moderated Collection that their Knol will appear in - you should limit immediately the ability to include Open Collections in Moderated ones or scrap Open Collections altogether in favor of Moderated Ones where Knol inclusion must be approved by the author.

In the scenario you established, your original knol would still be independent from the moderated collection. It would not have its branding nor give its owners control of your knol. You would still be free to join any moderated collection that accepts you. Could you outline what you feel is wrong with this scenario? As an example of something similar, currently any knol could link to your knol and accomplish the same thing.
Thanks for taking the time to help with this issue,
Knol Hlep

This is the issue - by allowing Open Collections to be collected in a Moderated Collection you;
1 - allow Knols to be published in multiple moderated collections thereby diminishing the value of the concept "Moderated" and your rule "Knols can only belong to one moderated collection at a time"
2 - the original author has no control over the publication of their Knol in a Moderated Collection - which was meant to be an important part of the concept "Moderated" - "Knols can only be added to a moderated collection if it's submitted by the knol's author"
3 - having my Knol published in a Moderated Collection gives implied support for the Moderated Collection publisher - this may not be the case.
4 - Moderated Collections move my Knols out of the CC Knol Library and into a commercial environment (i.e. the Moderated Collection's display change to corporate colors and logo). I would think that this significant change requires as a minimum, original Knol author consent.
Still, make your own mind up by looking at the last entry in my Moderated Collection here -
http://knol.google.c
Solution - Stop "Open Collections" from being collected by "Moderated Collections".

Within the next few weeks, I will begin contributing to Military.com and want my stuff to look tight. Thanks in advance for any help!!

So, the ultimate collection winner will be the Open Collection that collects all the Moderated Collections that have assembled all the Open Collections that include authors who have had no say in the process. How is this moderated? Where will it all end or is there another layer or two to go?
I say make 'moderated collections' ... moderated by
1 - Stopping Moderated Collections from including Open Collections and
2 - Stopping Open Collections from including Moderated Collections.
What do you think?

Anyone without medical background can set up a Medical Moderated Collection by simply copying from the list of above books or collections, add a medical symbol or white coats to mislead public and readers and get away. When these new copy and paste efforts ( add only 2-3 knols each day so remain in what is new section) get rewarded by quality badges, you are only devaluing the badge. The result is there are so many Swine Flu Collections and listings, out of these only 1 is by a medical doctor?
I think you have given up on health fraud and copy and paste efforts, OK but why award Q badges to these.

Could you back up - or flag up - my comment about the translation issue with Mod Collections. Knol Help seems to respond to you! I think it's an issue. Translations will increasingly become different entities. Cheers, Garry

Need an additional filter options on users collection list
Good evening,
I think that in list of My Knols must be additional option to filter collection. At this moment there are only
"Show results that are Published or Unpublished". There are now way to differentiate moderated collection from other collections.

Need for a Knol Home button in Moderated Collections
A standard feature of all webpages is an easy ability to go back to the 'home' page. Moderated collections offer no easy path back and may frustrate visitors creating a bad first time experience. I understand the concept of 'creating our own space', but we should not lose sight of the fact that we belong to a greater whole.
I think a small Knol logo or a text link "Knol Home Page" in a moderated collections header is essential to ensure we are not frustrating new users or visitors.

feedback
I can imagine that I might create one kind of collection (e.g. author centric) but later want to change it to another. I can see that it might be difficult to allow unrestricted changing but some kinds of changes might be possible.
It would be useful if I had the option to change the verified website - also not to display the verified website.
