Discussion

Global sales of biologic medicines were $87 billion in 2008. Vaccines were back in R&D of major companies (Sanofi Aventis, Glaxo Smith Kline, Merck and Wyeth) with global sales reaching $24 billion because of scare about avian influenza, bioterrorism organisms and new emerging infections like SARS. Introduction of cancer and rotavirus vaccines has greatly expanded the vaccine market. Pravnar® was the second top selling vaccine brand with sales of $ 2.7billion. Gardasil® at $ 2.8 billion was the top vaccine by sales. GSK Hepatitis and Infantrix/Pediatrix Vaccines each with sales of $ 1.2 billion each. Merck, GSK, Sanofi Aventis, Wyeth and Novartis were the top five vaccine companies. More vaccines are likely to reach sales of $ 1 billion and more in the next two years. FDA in 2008 approved 1 new vaccine (Rotarix®)  Several recently launched vaccines like Rotarix® and Menveo® are likely to bring in sales of over $1 billion within 2-3 years of launch. In R&D a follow up Prevanar® from Wyeth looka very attractive. The market and sales data in 2008 provides once again strong support for the R&D paradigm shift to biologic and within biologic towards human monoclonal antibodies, vaccines, erythropoietins, insulin’s and interferons.

Comments and suggestions for improved forecasts are invited from pharmaceutical and biotechnology executives and marketing professionals or Wall Street analysts. Reliable sales data from Japan and Europe is required for some of these listed products.

    Mary,

Your simple query is not a review and certainly does not require a new knol? I hope knol help will take note of my concerns.

Merck has a partnership with Sanofi Aventis Pasteur MSD in Europe which accounts for the difference. These are projections and the actual sales data is available now. Will be updated ASAP.
