Counsel woven into the fabric of real life is wisdom. - Walter Benjamin
Society today is self-destructive and chaotic
* Global warming threatens massive species extinction and loss of human life.
* Overpopulation is causing species extinction and resource loss.
* Half of human deaths are preventable - due to unhealthy lifestyles.

Wisdom for today must lead to wise action at a global level to reverse our bad choices and destructive actions.
Some characteristics of wisdom for today will be:
* Overcomes information glut by focusing on important information.
* Promotes action to solve global problems.
* Acts virally to promote itself so it is accepted
* Fosters discernment so people understand what right action looks like

Key issues:
Wisdom for today should address key issues. Below is a tentative list of key issues:
* Global Warming
* Overpopulation resulting in species extinction and resource depletion
* Global economic instability
* Lack of mechanism to develop agreement on key issues and prioritization

Hints to what wisdom involves:
Alex' issues on what's important (see his comment below):
- Economic paradigm (must be changed to reduce overpopulation, etc.)
- Who's running the show (must be changed to politicians, not scientists!)
(Does anyone else believe scientists run the show or politicians should?)
Chris Lucas suggests action using complexity theory as a possible approach. Worth a read!
16. The system controls us The boundaries that constrain our actions are self-generated by our collective beliefs. We create the systems by which we live. We set the rules by which any social norms arise. If they fail to achieve the desired results, then we can change them by simple belief alterations, by how we use words. The material world is irrelevant to this process, which is based upon abstract teleological considerations.
Facing complexity
Given the complexity of reality as pointed out by Chris Lucas, one "solution" to wise action would be to implement solutions with multiple excellent outcomes. This way, although outcomes and consequences are not truly known, chances of some or multiple positive outcomes in the long run are expanded Two examples of this are:
- Brad Pitt's approach to rebuilding New Orleans, designing low-cost energy efficient homes that will not only house folks in New Orleans but can also serve as models for use throughout the world where new low cost energy efficient homes are desired. "The goal is to create a template for intelligent building. The goal is to rebuild all of New Orleans, all the people who want to come back." See Larry King Interview
- The prevention program "strengthening families 10-14" which creates positive outcomes in reducing substance abuse, improving family funciton, reducing mental health problems, etc.World's biggest problems web portalAs moderator, I will only accept edits that foster these principles, carefully assuring that we are creating wisdom instead of adding to information glut. Being painfully aware that every word in every knol produced adds to the glut. With this warning, everyone is encouraged to submit edits that improve this wisdom for today.

Overpopulation cannot be stopped within current paradigm of economics.
In fact economics produces overpopulation that is needed to sustain economics.
Until the show is run by polititians and not scientists we are all doomed.
Well - you and I will not see the end of the world; m ydaughter will not see it either but if nothing done now if I ever have granchildren they probably will live out the end of the world.
What economic paradigm can foster wise population levels?
What leaders should run the show and how do we get them in power?

Humans need to go from current system of "everybody has the right to do "live well" through explotation of other people and ultimately wasting Earth resopurces" to "we as a whole should come up with the "right" number of people on Earth and maintain it on that level and for this the rights and freedoms as they are currently defined will have to be adjusted.
The transition from current system to sustainable one will recuire shift in thinking for critical mass of scientist amd general public - at present the numbers of people that see clearly where we are heading is very insignificant - even scientists don't get it and I am not talking about general public.

"Wisdom Knowledge Management Can Be Taught As A Subject Just Like Math And Science."
Please review the following review I wrote for Ron Young's knol on wisdom.
It is very clear to me that Ron Young has really achieved a milestone by taking the current information on
knowledge and wisdom on to new level. He has used the current knowledge and extracted the maximum benefits from it. The key word here is knowledge management. Cutting edge knowledge management is essential and best when it comes to technical know how. However when it comes to issues of human nature, emotional intelligence and wisdom then knowledge management is second best.
So far 'wisdom management' is based on the assumption that all we know about wisdom is its attributes and how to behave wisely. Notice how all the articles on wisdom describe wisdom qualities, how and why one must behave wisely and what are the benefits of behaving wisely. Well I have researched wisdom for the last 40 years and I have discovered wisdom to be a fragrance that is the aroma of a brain that is educated and developed to the highest emotional intelligence level. Since ancient times man has been trying to define wisdom as wisdom. How can you define a fragrance? As my friend Ms. Rosemary said how are you going to know the taste of an apple if you haven't tasted an actual apple. I know that wisdom can come from special insights but I can show you that wisdom can also come from common(assuming that the wisdom knowledge that I have developed will be common knowledge thanks to goooogle and knol) and regular knowledge which can be taught in schools and through knoll and regular seminars etc.
When it comes to emotional intelligence knowledge management is like you want to turn brass into gold. As you don't have the knowledge to turn brass into gold so you turn brass into looking like gold by gold plating the brass.
So you have a cover of gold but inside it is still brass. No wonder we assume basic human nature as animal nature that is innate and that can only be controlled. Well lets do an experiment give me 100 students who are well educated and have this outer plating of wisdom and who are able to manage their brute human nature. In a few seminars I can transform their brains to sprout wisdom. I will make their brains +2 emotionally super mature and they will become wise naturally.
I hope people like Ron who teach and provide knowledge management will consider incorporating my ideas along with their own excellent and highly developed knowledge management lessons. It would be even better if some institution would take up my challenge and let me prove that I can create wise human beings just as we create doctors and scientists.
