BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Dr. Friedman attended Princeton University and received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine combined BA/MD program. He did his residency training at Johns Hopkins Hospital, followed by a clinical and research fellowship in gastroenterology at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. From 1984 to 1993, he was on the faculty of Jefferson Medical College, where he served as Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine. From 1993 to 2003, he was a member of the Gastrointestinal Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he also served as Chief of the Walter Bauer Firm on the Medical Services. He is Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Tufts University School of Medicine. Since July 1, 2003, he has been Chair of the Department of Medicine at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Newton, MA, and Assistant Chief of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is the author of approximately 300 papers and chapters on all aspects of gastroenterology, co-editor of Sleisenger and Fordtran’s Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease and Handbook of Liver Disease, and past chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Subspecialty of Gastroenterology.
