Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen and all of Santa's reindeer are amazing creatures who can fly around the globe in a single night to help St. Nick deliver toys to good little girls and boys. But even magic flying reindeer sometimes need a little help. Occasionally Rudolph and the other reindeer land in the wrong yard. Usually it’s because it’s dark and they just missed the landing spot by a few feet and ended up in the neighbor’s yard. But you can help prevent this. If you want to be sure Santa’s reindeer can find your home on Christmas Eve, make some magic reindeer food and throw it on your lawn before going to sleep. It will help Santa's team find your home and give them a burst of energy to continue their flight.

Here are the simple directions.

1. Combine the magic ingredients. Everything you need to create magic reindeer food is probably in your kitchen already. If not, your local grocery store will surely have what you need. Here’s the list:

- 1/4 cup dry oats
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- Handful of green or red sugar sprinkles

To create the magic food, simply pour everything into a large bowl and mix together. After it’s mixed well, pour the reindeer food into a jar with a lid or a zip-lock plastic bag so it will stay fresh until Christmas Eve.
2. Write down the magic words. Abracadabra! is a great magic word, but it doesn’t work for reindeer.  On Christmas Eve, you’ll need to recite the magic reindeer food poem to make sure the spell works properly. Write these words down on a colorful piece of paper and attach the poem to the bag or jar with ribbon. Then you’ll be ready to give the reindeer food as a gift or to recite the poem on Christmas Eve.

Sprinkle on the lawn at night.
The moon will make it sparkle bright.
As Santa's reindeer fly and roam,
Let this guide them to my home!
3. Spread the food and wait for Santa! On Christmas Eve, get your bag or jar of magic reindeer food and sprinkle it across the front or back lawn. The sparkly sprinkles and the tasty scent of cinnamon will make sure Santa's sleigh team finds your yard and won’t accidentally land at the cranky old neighbor’s house. It’ll also give the reindeer a boost to keep them going all night long.

As you’re sprinkling the food, be sure to recite the poem to invoke the magic. When you’re done, hop into bed and go to sleep because reindeer are very shy. That’s why Santa only visits when you’re asleep.

In the morning, look outside to see how much food the reindeer ate. Sometimes they may only nibble a little, especially if they have been getting snacks from many houses. So if you have any reindeer food left over, let the local wildlife enjoy it. As long as you don’t say the magic words again, regular birds and squirrels can enjoy the food safely.

Merry Christmas!
