Business Outsourcing- The two sides of the same coin

Pros and Cons of Outsourcing

Even after being an age long concept, outsourcing still faces challenges that prevent it from becoming an accepted practice all over. This article throws light on the pros and cons of outsourcing for those who want to analyze it before taking any decision.

Outsourcing is a common practice of assigning tasks, normally undertaken within a company to outside agencies to either cut costs, save time or get the best of skills in the industry. Although it has gained huge popularity with big as well as giant firms, the debate of the pros and cons of outsourcing a business process still persist in all sectors.
Let’s analyze some of the common pros and cons of outsourcing

Pros

Expert assistance

Firms that accept outsourced projects specialize in their domain. Hence, they have in-house arrangements in form of manpower or technology and are associated with experts in the field to deliver the best result.

Reduced time

At times, the right resources or plan may not be available with a company to start with a project immediately. This results in delay in delivery and customer dissatisfaction. This can hamper customer relationship of a business that would mean loss of business in the future.

Reduced cost

To acquire new resources like technology or manpower for a particular project a company might have to incur heavy expenditure. Outsourcing the same task to a firm that specializes in the same domain could not only save expenditure but also guarantee high quality result.

Focus on core issues

Management can shift their focus from peripheral activities towards more important tasks that directly affect the company.

Cons

Communication gap

There may be hassles like different work culture, timing or language that might come in between efficiently carrying out a task with another company.

Leakage of confidential information

As getting a project outsourced would mean disclosing certain amount of information about the company, it could lead to leakage of company secrets by mistake or deceitfully. This is one of the reasons why many business owners are reluctant to outsource their projects to other firms, even if it would mean spending some extra money on the job.

Costly affair

Though businesses outsource work to other agencies to save a few bucks, they often end up spending more than what it would have taken to get it completed in-house. Some outsourcing companies have established their name in the industry and quote prices according to their whims and fancies that have created a false belief for the others in the market.

Lesser management flexibility

Once a business outsources its project to a company, it has very little say in the process. Great article...

I get most of my HR tasks outsourced from outside agencies. Till date, I have saved a lot of time a money. Since I am a sole proprietor, I don't have ample time to pay attention to the recruitment part of my business. It's also a one-time job, so why need an HR dept?

In agreement...

I agree with you. Outsourcing surely lets us get the best of the services in the industry. And most of them are not required all around the year, so why waste money in hiring full-time employees?

An enriching read! Outsourcing may have become a popular way to get projects completed at a much faster pace and reduced cost but I totally agree with the point of leakage of confidential information. To come to think of it anybody can misuse the liberty of getting access data of a company.
