Although many landscapes consist of many plants, features and accessories play a large role in most landscapes. When I work with clients through my company, Steven Vandora and Associates, I spend a lot of time carefully considering features. The right features can provide a focal point for a garden and can completely transform a landscape year-round. The wrong proportions or too many features can create a cramped look. Today, property owners are fortunate in having many garden features to choose from:
1) Benches. When I work with clients through Steven Vandora and Associates, I have to admit that I recommend benches highly. If there is a spot in your landscape that is shaded and offers a good view, a nice bench can provide a great place to read, work or just relax. A bench that is visible from your home serves as a focal point in your garden as well. There are few gardens that are too small for a bench and if you only can have one feature in your garden, I would recommend a bench.
2) Trellises, arches and pergolas are structures that can add depth and structure to your garden. You can encourage climbing plants to trail over these structures, which can look dramatic or romantic. If you don’t want trees in your landscape but want to add height and texture, these structures are a great option.
3) Planters and pots. Planters range from small and plain to huge and very elaborate. I love them because they are a very economical and fast way to add interest to a garden that is flat. You don’t have to add terraces or complicated structures – you can group pots to create an eye-catching look. When choosing planters for Steven Vandora and Associates, though, I spend a long time weighing proportion and I suggest you do the same in your garden. Too large a pot can dwarf a tiny yard while tiny pots can be swamped on a huge expanse of yard.
4) Water features. I love water and I think it is a great addition to almost any yard. The sound of water is very soothing and looks terrific in just about every landscape. Today, property owners have tons of options. From large man-made lakes to tiny potted ponds or bird baths, water can be part of even a very modest garden. When choosing water features, I recommend looking for options that keep the water moving. This creates a wonderful sound and ensures that the water does not become a stagnant and slimy breeding ground for mosquitoes and other pests.
