The Beginning of the Day
In this resolution, the General Assembly noted that 2001 marked the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. The Organization of African Unity (OAU) had agreed to have International Refugee Day coincide with Africa Refugee Day on 20 June. The Assembly therefore decided that, from 2001, 20 June would be celebrated as World Refugee Day. Source

UNHCR - UN Refugee Agency
The agency highlights the fundamental need for protection. For some, this means economic security; for others, protection is freedom from violence and persecution. On World Refugee Day, we turn our attention to the millions of refugees who live without material, social and legal protection.
Protection is also about raising awareness. We cannot protect refugees if their plight remains invisible. On World Refugee Day, we highlight the universal nature of protection. Not only are refugees protected all around the globe, but the responsibility for protection is equally global.
We want to promote engagement at the grassroots level, in local communities, workplaces and online. Only through a global network of supporters can we meet the manifold needs of protection.

Ghana

Now there are only 150,000 refugees and asylum seekers in the entire region of West Africa, most of whom are Liberian, Mauritanian and Senegalese. Ghana hosts the highest concentration of refugees in the region.
Pakistan
1.6.2009
The suffering and need of millions of Pakistan’s displaced people has the potential to be protracted, lasting for many months, according to UK relief and development agency Tearfund.
According to local sources, as many as 3.4 million people are now reported to be vulnerable after being uprooted from their homes in the Swat Valley and neighbouring areas of northern Pakistan; the majority leaving since the Pakistan Army began its recent offensive last month.
Tearfund says that the scale of need should focus international attention and trigger a major humanitarian response to avoid prolonging the suffering.
South Africa
11.3.2009
Hundreds of Zimbabwean refugees have arrived in central Johannesburg and are living on the streets following the closure of a refugee processing centre at the show grounds in Musina, Limpopo.
Sri Lanka
