Nokia Internet Tablet are three devices released by nokia, running Maemo (a distribution of linux made by Nokia).

Introduction

Nokia Internet Tablets (IT) were born in 2005. When Nokia presented the first IT. The Nokia 770, also wrongly called Nokia n770 (this first tablet isn't a Nokia n-series).

Possibly the main feature of the Internet Tablet is the Operating System (OS): Maemo. Maemo is a debian-based distribution, with a linux kernel, and using the GTK+ graphics toolkit, but now it also supports QT4.

The Internet Tablets aren't phones. All of them have WIFI and bluetooth to conect to the Internet, and there is a version of n810 that has WIMAX.

OS2005

This version was installed by default on nokia 770.

OS2006

This OS was released as an update for the nokia 770. There are a lot of changes and the existing apps need to be recompiled. Is the last ITOS that supports nokia 770 officially.

  • Full-screen finger keyboard
  • New look

OS2007

This OS was installed by default on N800.
  • Performance and stability improvements and bug fixes
  • Opera 8
  • Flash 7

OS2008

Was released with the N810, but its officially compatible with N800.
  • Performance and stability improvements and bug fixes
  • When you install it on a N800 it increase the clock of the CPU from 333 Mhz to 400 Mhz
  • When you install it on a N800 you get more battery life.
  • Frequency scaling
  • MicroB (Gecko based) web browser instead of Opera
  • The file manager supports Bluetooth (to acces files throgh bluetooth) and SAMBA
  • Support for Windows Media and H264
  • Improved suport for USB-Host, by default you can attach a keyboard and a USB disk (Pendrive, HD, etc)
  • The UI is more finger friendly
  • The UI now includes transparencies
  • A new application called "Map". Really is Wayfinder (a GPS routing software), you can download maps for free. But if you will voices and routing you have to pay (every N8x0 came with 7 day trial) 
  • Flash 9
  • Bluetooth Headset support

OS2008 Diablo

Diablo is a feature update of OS2008, it's a second version of OS2008, we can say that it's a minor update but with interesting changes:
  • Performance and stability improvements and bug fixes
  • It's the latest ITOS that you have to reflash to install it, after Diablo you can upgrade with the package manager (now with the SSU - Seamless System Update - The ITOS can be updated and upgraded very easly.
  • AGPS support
  • Modest is the new email client by default (Modest is notably better than the old email client)
  • MicroB browser is now faster
  • Wayfinder (Map) was updated

The ITOS Hackers Edition

The users of nokia 770 have made the ITOS Hackers Edition, that able the nokia 770 to run OS2207 and OS2008. This versions are also called OS2007HE and OS2008HE.

Other non-ITOS Operating Systems for the Internet Tablets

The community have also installed debian and Android on the Internet Tablets.

Main Features:

  • Is very easy to develop and port aplications
  • Multi-task
  • Very easy conection manager

Main issues:

  • Any of the OS released for the moment, have a PIM (Personal Information Manager) suite. (community have made it possible)
  • Both N800 and N810 have a powerful PowerVR chip that can make awsome 3D rendering, but any OS have yet supported this chip.
  • N800 and N810 hardware support A2DP but any OS have yet supported (community have made it possible).
  • No screen rotation support (community have made it possible).
