Other Knols in the "Help for Knol Authors" series by Peter Baskerville
How to add Google Analytics to your Knol: Step 1 - Sign in
Make sure that you are signed into Knol (i.e. if your email address and “Sign out” are visible at the top right-hand corner of your screen, then you are signed in). Otherwise click on the "Sign in" and enter your email address and password in the boxes provided and displayed below.
Step 2 - Open Google Analytics

Step 5 - Read Introduction to Analytics
After you have entered your password and clicked "Sign in" you will be taken to the "Introduction to Analytics" screen, with information about this free service. After reading the contents of the page you are then invited to proceed by clicking on the "Sign up" button on the bottom left-hand corner of the screen as displayed here.
Step 6 - Add Knol Site Details
You are required to complete the form displayed below. Make sure you complete the boxes from top to bottom and in that order.
Enter the following identified in
RED:
- Website's URL: http:// knol.google.com
- Account Name: My Knols (The program will default to knol.google.com but change it to something like “My Knols” or a descriptor that you prefer)
- Time zone country or territory: Select your country from the pull down menu.
- Time zone: Time zones will appear based on the country you have selected above. Select the Time Zone appropriate to you from the options available in the pull down menu.
After entering the data and choosing the option from the pull down menus, click the "Continue" button at the bottom left-hand corner of the page as shown above.

When finished completing this form, click the "Continue" button at the bottom left-hand corner of the page as shown above.
Step 8 - Agree with Terms & Conditions + Data Sharing
Read the GOOGLE ANALYTICS TERMS OF SERVICE. If you agree with the terms of service then click the box. The displayed tick means - "Yes, I agree to the above terms and conditions."
Before proceeding to the next step it may be prudent for you to review the default options that have been set for sharing your Knol Analytics data. Look at the options and choose the one that best matches your wishes.
Click on the link "Edit Settings" and the information in the box below will appear. Select the option that you agree with concerning your data and then click on the "Create New Account" button at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. (as shown above)
Google Analytics Data Sharing Settings Please select from the options below. [Learn more] Share my Google Analytics data... | | With other Google products only Enable enhanced ad features and an improved experience with AdWords, AdSense and other Google products by sharing your website's Google Analytics data with other Google services. Only Google services (no third parties) will be able to access your data. [show example] | | | Anonymously with Google and others Enable benchmarking by sharing your website data in an anonymous form. Google will remove all identifiable information about your website, combine the data with hundreds of other anonymous sites in comparable industries and report aggregate trends in the benchmarking service. [show example] | Do not share my Google Analytics data |
Step 9 - Ignore Analytics: Tracking Page
You will then be taken to the Analytics: Tracking Page. This page was written for the general public and is not applicable to Knol Users. The Knol team have automated this process, so go straight to the continue button. (i.e. You don't need to copy and paste this code into the HTML of your Knol)
Step 10 - Secure your Analytics Identity Code
You will then be taken to the “Overview » My Knols ( Edit account settings ) “ page. Look for the line that looks something like this "http://knol.google.com UA-8743681-1" and write down or copy your link code “UA-xxxxxxx-x”. This is your Analytics code or profile.
Step 11 - Edit Knol Preferences
Return to the Knol Site. Go to your “Home/summary Page” and select “Edit My Preferences” which is located beside your photo at the top left. You will then be taken to the screen below.
Step 11 - Enter your Analytics code into your Knol Preferences
Click on Analytics on the top menu and you will see the following screen appear.
You can now paste or type in your Analytics code “UA-xxxxxxx-x” but be sure not to include any spaces on the end.
Click on the "Save" button at the bottom left and congratulations ... the work is done. Your Knols are now being monitored by the powerful and comprehensive Google Analytics. Click on the Knol logo at the top left of the page and return to the Knol Site's main page.
Step 12 - View Analytics Report regarding your Knols.
You will get a "Welcome to Google Analytics" email with many useful links, however ignore "Step 1: Install tracking code". In about 24-36 hours, log onto Knol and then go to http://www.google.com/analytics/ . Click the "Access Analytics" button and when the screen appears, locate and click the link "Full Report". The data from your Knols that has being captured since registration will then appear.
- It would be best to create a link to your Google Analytics from outside Knol, by making it a favourite or a bookmark in your browser.

Knol-Adsense and Analytics
I can't see AdSense for Knol-Articles in Analytics. Is it my fault or didn't this feature work for Knol-articles?
If it works it would be great if you show how to make Adsense visible in Analytics.
Isn't it works, please can you make a notice, that Analytics didn't show Adsense-Clicks for Knol-articles until now.
Best
Andreas

Thanks for the detailed steps, it worked and now I can better track down potential copyright violations and commercial abuse.
It is a great way to pick out any out of range activity by readers.

Escaling my comment - new Knol suggestion
Peter --
The highly positive feedback suggests that Step 12 should lead to a separate Knol, a guide to the meaning of each Analytic measure for the uninitiated civilian. You can ask your commenters to add their own guidance in Moderated Collaboration mode. It would be extra valuable if suggestions were offered to improve key analytics, through Knol editing.
I know this probably sounds like SEO and in practice it probably is. But the approach is metrics driven and the target audience is the civilian who runs in horror at the thought of SEO.
What good is Analytics if there's not some way to learn from it?
Just as important for analytics is in answering the age old question of 'How am I going?". We all like to compare ourselves to benchmarks achieved by the group to help answer this question. For this purpose I hope enough authors will provide their results to help set 'the norm'.
I have just been waiting for the numbers to turn into 'soup' as you say. Watch this space.

This is terrific
I was struggling with how to get Analytics to work. I tried inserting the html stuff. I just now followed your instructions and am looking forward to seeing data. I hope it will look retroactively because I had a fivefold surge in pageviews this week which I would like to learn about.

Google has webmaster tools that they tout as being able to increase traffic. The tools only operate on "verified" sites, however. I've had no success trying to figure out how to "verify" my Knol, following the instructions given. The instructions don't seem to apply to Knols. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Steve
