NOTE: The title, sub-title and summary should all be replaced with your own words. Also everything in (BLUE) should be replaced by your own words and everything in RED should be deleted. The (black) can stay if you think it is useful.
(Tip #1 - In order for your training KNOL to reach the greatest number of needy learners, try to select a title that best matches your target group's online query. This can be achieved by first trialling titles with a keyword search program like Google Keywords.
View the results and then choose a title with sufficient searches to make your training efforts worthwhile.)
(Tip #2 - You may wish to insert an appropriate cartoon here and introduce humor as an ice-breaker to the training session. For best results, be sure to select L for large and set wrap to on as I have done here. See New Yorker Cartoon Bank help on how to do this)
This training session is targeted at ... (what broad group of people?) ... who have ... (what particular mind set or need?) ..... Whilst specifically developed for ... (what specific group of people?) ..., other ... (who else could benefit from this training?) ... may also find the training session beneficial.
Prior to commencing this training session, it is recommended that you first complete ...(what prior session?).
This training session assumes that ... (what is the assumed learning level of your learners?) ... but that you realise to ... (do what?) ... , you need to ... (what learning do you need?) .... So, this session seeks to deliver ... (what specific topic training?) ... guidance from the ... (whose point of view? i.e. supervisors, users, trainers) ... point of view.
(Tip #3 - Line breaks help visually break down the training session into smaller more manageable portions. You can choose a different line break color by selecting the entire line below and changing the 'text background color' - copy and paste throughout the KNOL as required.)
(Tip #4 - Complete this section last. Place here a list, separated by comas, of the key words covered, through out the document. Use a keyword tool like abakus (link below) to discover the key words and phases used in the document.
At the completion of this training session, you will be able to:
- Learning outcome 1 - (i.e. Download photos onto a computer)
- Learning outcome 2 -
- Learning outcome 3 -
- Learning outcome 4 -
- Learning outcome 5 -
(Tip #5 – Use active words like - list, summarize, name, explain, describe, classify, compare, define, identify and arrange, develop, calculate, prepare and avoid abstract words like - know, infer, deduce, perceive, understand and comprehend)
(Tip #6 - Be specific in your learning outcomes. If there are three options then say that they will be able to Identify these three options. Also limit your learning outcomes to no more than five. If more are required then it may be best to split the training into two sessions)
Introduction - (Knol Title)
1 - (State why this training session is important to the learner. Find the key that is most likely to motivate the learner to want to complete this training session. i.e. What is the key benefit that awaits the learner who masters this training?)
2 - (Provide a preview of the structure of this training session) This training session is divided into ... (how many?) parts. Each part provides the ideas, knowledge and skills necessary to answer the focus question posed at the beginning. External links to definitions are provided where appropriate. Each part is wrapped up by a summary. You are encouraged to participate in the training by completing the activities set at the conclusion of each part.
A questionnaire has been prepared at the conclusion of this session with answers provided at the end of this page. This will help you gauge your degree of learning achieved in this training session. Additional resources and a glossary are provided to add a greater depth to the learning experience.
- Item or access to - 1
- Item or access to - 2
(Tip #7 - Outline here the resources that the learner will need to have in order to assist with the learning. It might be a pen and paper, a word processing document opened or access to a 2nd web browser).
PART 1 – (Focus question 1)? (i.e. What are the different components in a digital camera?)
(Tip #8 - You may find it easiest to have the equal number of parts here, as there are learning outcomes and to ask the appropriate focus question that will bring about the stated and desired learning outcome).
(Tip #9 - In this space, develop the ideas, knowledge and skills necessary to answer the question. Where possible provide a step-by-step explanation)
(Tip #10 - Include photos to help make the learning interesting. If you don't have your own you can always download photos from websites like flickr.com that have Creative Commons-licensed content. You find these photo's by using their advanced search facility. Be sure to attribute the source and adhere to the copyright owner's license requirements. NOTE: If you plan to include Google Absence in your KNOL, then you will need to restrict your search to "Find content to use commercially". For more on inserting images see Inserting Images)
(Tip #11 - This would also be a great place to put a video demonstrating the skill to be learned, showing an example of the subject mater, a humorous 'how not to' YouTude video or even a personal chat with the learners talking about an experience (good/bad) that you had with the subject matter. Knol-help - "To embed a video, select the appropriate video option from the Insert menu and copy and paste the URL of your video in the prompt. Once you've selected your video title and options, click Save to finish adding your video. To view it, save your KNOL and go to view mode".)
Summary
Activity 1.
(Tip #12 - Participation is an important component of learning. Where possible set an activity that involves an application of the learning. One way to achieved this could be asking the learner to find or describe an example from within their own context)
PART 2 - (Focus question 2)?
Summary
Activity 2.
PART 3 - (Focus question 3)?
Summary
Activity 3.
PART 4 - (Focus question 4)?

Activity 4.
PART 5 - (Focus question 5)?
(Tip #13 - Make the last question in the session the final 'Format Header'. Since KNOLs only allow 10 headers to be displayed in the summary (without selecting the 'more' option), it is best to make sure the 'sub-header' questions make it into this summary. This allows learners to 'cherry pick' just the questions they want answered. The space provided by KNOL ensures that you can display your entire question)
Summary
1 - For an overview or introduction of ...(
what specific topic?) ... see:
http://
(Tip #14 - Search the web or other KNOLs for links that your believe will help the learner progress through the session and link them here. "You can create a link to another KNOL or another page on the Internet by clicking on Link on the toolbar at the top. Then simply paste in the text that the user will click on and paste in the URL" - Advanced Knol Techniques)
2 - For another series of lectures on the topic …
(what specific topic?) ... see:
http://
3 - For a glossary of terms on ... (what?) . see:
http://
(Tip #15 - It is important to provide an easy link to a 'glossary of terms' that is targeted towards your training session. Ideally you would create a KNOL that covered this but while it is being developed it may be best to link to one of the free glossary sites available on the web)
(Tip #16 - If you do use a term in the content that you believe is new to the learner then it may be best to link that word to the most appropriate web definition that you can find. i.e. Copy the URL of the web definition, select the word in text, click on the Link menu option, choose the web site button and paste the URL in the box provided) On a separate piece of paper write down your answers to the following questions. Comparing these answers with those provided at the end of this page will help you establish the extent to which the learning has taken place on this session topic.
(Tip #17 - Use a combination of the following question types to test the extent of the learner's learning. Ask at least one but preferably two question from each of the parts outlined above - copy and paste where appropriate)
______________________________________________________________________________
Q1 – Make a statement about an aspect discussed in the content.
______________________________________________________________________________
Q2 – Make a statement from the content and leave blank ................. the word(s) you want inserted.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Q3 – Ask a question and offer four answers? These can be either three correct and one NOT, or three incorrect and one correct?
(A) Answer A (B) Answer B
(C)
Answer C (D) Answer D
Conclusion - (Knol Title)
The key learnings from this training session were:
- key learning 1
- key learning 2
- key learning 3
- key learning 4
- key learning 5
(Summarize the main ideas that were covered in the session. State again the key learnings. Go over the learning outcomes and make learning statement about what you think were the most important ones.)
(Provide feedback on the activities and the results of the questionnaire.) If you were able to complete all set activities and achieved 100% correct answers on the questionnaire, then congratulations your learning is complete and you are now ready to progress to the next topic. If you answered a question incorrectly then review the session part identified in the table below. Also, if you had difficulties completing any of the activities, then it is recommended that you link to the Additional Resources, as these may help you to complete them. If you have further questions you could post them on one of the following sites .....
(Tip #18 - Depending on your planned interactivity, you can provide your email from the Link button or provide other contact details for the learner to engage directly for feedback. Other options could be to have the learner place their questions on www.allexperts.com/ or
www.answerbag.com/ or
www.answers.yahoo.com/.)
(Link this learning outcome to their next session)
The key learning from this session concerning ... (detail the PARTs) ... will provide the underpinning knowledge for the next learning level, which deals with ... (what is the next step in the learning process?) ....

Web 2.0 and graphics
You could embed Flickr Creative commons into your template. Sliderocket certainly have done a great job of just that in their marvelous slideshow solution. Automatic upload without leaving the slideshow.Use a polling tool for questionnaires or a quizz tool?
So yes the visual is critical to clarity and content and engagement. Sound files/video too. So that it all flows....in a best practice manner with flexibility.More interactive/collabor
Drag and Drop ideal...There must be a pre made platform that you can upload this to surely?
How about writing a Knol Template and putting all your ideas into it? I would be the first to use it.
See link below on how to write a template.
http://knol.google.c
Just make sure that the title ends in the word "Template" and that your contribution is licensed under the Creative Commons.
It would be great to have more templates to help new Knol Author's express their ideas.
Here is how I have applied this template to create a learning Knol.

Suggestion: make tables narrower to avoid the introduction of scrollbars
Also - make the horizontal bars (the solid purple ones, the *** lines and the --- lines) narrower.
